So true! I am surprised by many Phoenicians' complaints about traffic. Almost everyone in Phoenix I have met has been to L.A., the most consistently congested and traffic plagued city in the world with the 2 busiest freeways in the world (i-10 and i-110). And D.C.'s narrow streets and spread out suburbs (worse than Phoenix) make it an absolute NIGHTMARE. When I lived in NYC, my "commute" was 26 minutes, LOL. Mostly walking and a subway ride however. In Phoenix my commute is 15 minutes by foot, 6 minutes by bike, and 1.5 minutes in a car, LOL! But I live and work downtown.

Its worse here in Chicago' suburbs. No joke!

Seriously though, PHX's traffic is a breeze, be thankful for that. And as the Valley continues to grow, it will only get worse, but never to D.C./NYC/Atlanta/Chicago proportions Id imagine.

it all depends on where you are going - anytime it takes over an 75 minutes on a consistent basis to go 20 miles that's bad

i'm thankful things open up massively in the summers - but winter snarls are really bad here although I do agree they don't last as long as in other places - but in the winters there is no way I leave anywhere near 5

basically anyone coming in from the SE or SW to downtown will have a lack of enjoyment in the winters

I once spent 4 hours commuting 40 miles from Lombard to Wrigleyville, as a 3 pm snowfall crippled traffic. I used to get to Lansing Michigan from Lombard in 3 1/2 hours!

FCorrales, where's the study that shows 72% of PHX drivers go 5-10 mph above speed limit from 2-4 pm, 8-12 mph over from 4-6 pm?????

I think they do this with the ASSumption that they're saving gas. While driving slower may increase fuel efficiency slightly, they are spending more time on the roads, so there is very little (if any) savings. All they're really doing is impeding the flow of traffic, which is a traffic violation according to Arizona law. Also, driving with the window open & A/C turned off actually creates more of a wind resistance ... so that silly maneuver actually decreases gas mileage!

You're right about many transplants who move here & complain about the traffic. I have found that many of them are the loser types who moved here for the sunshine. They love our sun & don't mind the heat ... but they gripe about practically everything else.
I agree with your take. A lot of them are from smaller cities that don't have any traffic or they are elderly people who want to drive slow. Either way, that style of driving is what causes the problems. It's that type of driver that seems like they aren't paying attention because they take forever to make decisions or they lack etiquette. They will rush to pull in front of you but then they will drive really slow.

Chicago is worse than Phoenix but I agree with you in that it's much better than a lot of big cities like NY, Boston, LA, Dallas, Atlanta or Houston. It's bad but it's not insane. I don't really see traffic as a problem in Chicago. It's the 3rd largest city in the country with a population of over 5 million so it's going to have traffic but it's well controlled. They are also great about getting the snow off the roads

yeah - i think with most places, here specifically, that drivers make bad traffic

how many times has one lane on the highway come to a complete stop while the other lanes on both sides zoom bye?

the 60 to stopped brake check?

the lane hopper guy who makes everyone he cuts off brake and creates that reaction backward

the i've never seen someone pulled over before guy

those are the people that really make our traffic mind blowing

How true! Or they will slide sideways into the exit lane at the last second because they almost missed their exit, nearly sideswiping another driver. They are often the inattentive types who move slow, and sit still at green left turn arrows or green lights ... then constantly bellyache about everyone in the Valley drives too fast for them. If they can't keep up with the pace, they shouldn't even be driving. Driving isn't a right ... it's a privilege!

yeah - when I moved here I was warned how fast everyone drove - the highways are like speedways, etc

never in my life have I pegged my car at the limit and just flew past drivers - happens out here constantly - i'm still looking for all these fast drivers

Chicago has 3 million, 9+ million in the metro. And yes, its not as bad as DC or Boston or NYC or L.A., but its worse than Houston and Dallas, IMO. Traffic here can be just as bad as anything in L.A., sometimes worse. As I stated above, its taken me 2.5 hours to go 25-30 miles before. Even my experience in L.A. (not much) wasnt that bad. Ive also been stuck in traffic jams on Lake Shore Drive at 1am! It gets uber ridiculous sometimes.
