All of Phoenix is pretty much laid back.

I, too, would not move without a job unless you have a VERY large financial cushion. The economy is hurting quite a bit here right now --it's not the boom town that people from back East flocked to in the past.

Tempe would be more to your liking, I suspect. Both are generally "laid back", but Mesa is much more politically conservative than Tempe, and is oriented toward families with children.

Smile Summer Heat

We have been here for 5 yrs. now, and never has one of us complained about the summer heat! We are from Mi. try living in grey -25degree temps. for 4 months out of the year! And when those 12 weeks of summer come and you cant go outside unless you want to be eatin alive by mosquitos. 95degrees and 90% humidity is not comfortable either.
More than happy to be here!!

I agree with Steve. I wouldn't move here right now. If you really want to move to Arizona, I would wait for at least a year until the local economy improves. I love Arizona but unless you have a job lined up, I would not move here just to start anew. It can be quite challenging to find a job in our economy. I know a lot of people who were forced to moving out of Arizona due to job losses.

The job market in PHX metro is very poor and seems to be declining daily. It is very, very difficult to job-hunt long distance here. Don't waste your efforts - when you arrive have a great, professional resume, letters of references and recommendation, a good understanding of your commute requirements, and then schedule appointments with the top 20 recruiting agencies in the city (especially if you are career track specific). And network, network, network. Go to Vistaprint.com - as soon as you have a LOCAL address and telephone number - talk to everyone you meet about their job and company - hand them YOUR card. There are jobs here (albiet the pay is probably not even close to what you are used to) - but be prepared to work your butt off just for an interview much less a real job.

I may be wrong....I would think you would be more comfortable and have a better time in Tempe/Central Phoenix vs. Mesa.

In terms of political conservatism and traditional family orientation, just like Mesa, perhaps more so.

Default Movng to AZ rent to own

Hello to both of you,
Forgive me but I am assuming that when you say life partner you mean what I mean.
I moved here from Texas in Oct. It is beautiful here and like the others say, 4 months out of the year, it is very hot but you adapt physically.
I met my life partner here and have enjoyed the gay community in Phoenix. Pride here is fabulous!
It is different from Dallas. Dallas has an area of town where most of the community hangs out. Here in Phoenix it is spread out over different areas of town.
Are you guys home bodies? Do you want to be close to the action or care if you drive 20 or 30 minutes to the action? My partner & I live on the west side. There are no bars or restaurants that are "friendly" on the west side but there are incredible deals to be had for property on this side of town. The taxes are lower too.
