Hey everyone, thinking about planning a surprise trip for my husband and me to Phoenix the end of November... Can anyone give me some hotels, that are decently priced, clean/safe, and relatively close to the Gateway Airport in Mesa? That's where we would fly in/out. Also, would you recommend renting a car over trying to use public transport? I've never attempted public transportation on my own, so I am a little nervous to do that. Last time we visited Phoenix we had a relative who lives there! Thanks for the advice!

Can't recommend a hotel (I'm sure there are many, I've just never been to one in that area), but I can recommend this place to eat:
Joe's Farm Grill Main

I'm sure if you go to Hotels.com and search under Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler and/or Queen Creek, you'd find something.
Are you or your husband a pilot?

No, neither of us are pilots - lol - I wish! We fly into that airport because we use Allegiant Air (cheap flights from Fargo ND to Phoenix/Mesa). We've only flown there once but really liked it because it's small & easy to navigate for us small town folks

This is a brand new hotel in Gilbert, and is located ~10 minutes West of the airport on the San Tan Freeway. It is also approximately 1 mile from the San Tan Village open air shopping mall that has many sit down restaurants such as The Keg, Cantina Laredo, Kona Grill, Arriba Mexican Food, etc.

Phoenix Hotel - Gilbert AZ Hotel, Hyatt Place

I would recommend renting a car from a place that can pick you up at the airport. The airport itself is not near the city center, and I can't image the public transportation would be good out there.

I can tell you what ones to avoid, the Embassy Suites on 24th St and Thomas, and the Embassy Suites on 44th St and Thomas, both look great online, but I have worked at both and they are both very bad hotels, bad service, old rooms, and a bad area.

South Mountain resort is not too far, there are also a few other hotels that offer discounted rides to and from the airport for reasonable rates.

You're looking at a 30-40 minute drive, that is not close at all.

Are you flying into the Mesa Airport, or the Phoenix Airport?

The OP was quite clear in the original post, and again in the next post-- she's asking about Williams Gateway Airport, not the Phoenix airport.

To the OP-- you are definitely going to need a car to get around. The hotel you were directed to should be fine. Hope you have a great time!

I didn't see the word Gateway in the first post, I must have overlooked it.

Either way, avoid the Embassy Suites in Phoenix.

Find the airport on google maps, set the zoom to as far away as you are willing to be, enter "hotels" in the search box and you'll see what your options are. You'll also be able to see if a hotel is right off a busy freeway which might be a negative.
