I went to the one of the same series of meetings Downtown. It was interesting. I'd say go if you have time.

Can people actually contribute, or is it more of a sit and watch sort of thing?

The one I went to was highly participatory. We broke into groups and brainstormed ideas.

It's going to look pretty much the same as today only more crowded. When I moved here in the 60's they asked a similiar question "what's it gonna look like in the year 2000". One predominant answer was "Phoenix and AZ will never grow, not enough water" etc, etc; same as they say today.
2050, just more congestion and smog and the usual complaints like " why didn't they do this, or that, 50 years ago".
In 2050 I'll be way over 100 years old, so probably won't be around to see it.

I don't care. I won't be here to see it. And frankly nobody knows.

I wandered into the Arkansas forum on accident trying to click on AZ, and saw a really good thread about all the future plans they have for some dinky town there that isnt even experiencing even 1/4 of the growth that Phoenix has. I think it was Fayetteville. Anyhow, I was completely astonished at how much thought they are putting into their future regardless of how insignificant the growth is. Likewise, I find it disturbing how little thought is going into Phx's future.

I would guess in so many years, if Phx continues on its current path and day by day city planning mentality, it wont look much different at all. There will just be more cars on the road, more track housing rings and freeways, and air will be filthier.

For the 5th largest city in the entire country, it doesnt offer much more than any average city anywhere, and if they keep moving forward in the same manner, they will just add more of the same useless redundant chains.

Im curious... What types of things were you guys interested in adding for the future?

What comes of all this brainstorming?

Is anyone listening to these ideas or was it mostly just dreaming up crazy futuristic scenarios?

The one thing that I want for Phoenix by 2050 is something individual and spectacular to place us on the map. San Fran the Golden Gate, New York the Statue of Liberty, Chicago the Sears Tower, these sort of things leave emotional imprints on all Americans and they hold these memories in their minds as iconic links to the very cities that contain them. Phoenix needs to get on the page and build something that does this.
