again, DON'T worry about it....Mod cut, as you did not specify what the poster said, the went to....

if you want Mod cut...this is to the point of bashing...go walk thru Fashion Square, the Waterfront, Kierland (though it's not in Scottsdale), AJ's at Lincoln and Scottsdale, and a few other hip (for now) spots....if you don't want snobs, enjoy the other 97% of Scottsdale....

you will see Ferraris, Bentleys, and tons of Escalades (most are leased, borrowed, or driven by car salespeople)....you'll also see tons of Kias and Chevys....

lots of traffic: people going to the store, heading home from work, the usual.....some drivers are very self-important, too....me first!!!

but be yourself, drive carefully, don't show off, don't get into debt (goggle "30K millionaire scottsdale"), smile, have fun.........

That is because Scottsdale only has a population of 250,000 or so, and Chicago has 3 million.

I can't really understand why you are comparing one of the nation's largest cities with a suburb of Phoenix. Of course there is going to be more flair in Chicago.

It would be better to compare Scottsdale to places like Beverly Hills or South Beach, same kind of upper-class snobbery and Barbie-Ken lookalikes strutting around.

Scottsdale is known as the "Beverly Hills of the desert". It is the more showy and affluent area in Phoenix metro just like Beverly Hills in Los Angeles metro.

When we lived in Tempe we had friends who referred to it as "Snottsdale."

I've heard Snottsdale, too, but Snobsdale seemed to be the most common one I heard.

I lived in South Scottsdale (South of Indian School Road) and was too busy working or working out to notice snobbishness. That means I did not go to clubs. I had great restaurant quality food every evening for awhile - my girlfriend in those days was a great cook. We were down-to-earth.

There are upcale areas all over the Valley. Peoria has upscale areas, I understand (never been there). Ahwatukee has upscale areas. But I never encountered snobs in Ahwatukee either. I usually cook at home anyway. Occasionally I would go to a bar in one of those restaurants stradling I-10 on Ray Road and people dress casually.

Your post made me think of it, so I will say this. There are great restaurants in Scottsdale! I had multiple experiences where the same chain restaurant was better and had better service than the same one elsewhere in the valley. Of course, I always chalked that up to the more snobby/demanding clientele creating the need for it just so the restaurant could survive.

There are definitely upscale areas all over the valley, but there are also a lot of people who move to Scottsdale, just because it's Scottsdale. Therefore, there is more "showing off" and flaunting there than in other places. It seemed to us that a lot of people moved from the LA area to be the big fish in the little pond, versus in LA where they were the small fish in the big pond.

I ate out for lunch almost every single day while working in Scottsdale and couldn't believe some of the entitlement issues that people there have. It blew my mind...

if you look for the snobbiness aspect, you will find it. In any city. I dont see it here in Scottsdale more than any other cities ive lived in. People need to hug more.

Love it! I agree people need to hug more!

Your post does make me wonder, though? Was I guilt of looking for it? I don't think I was, but that doesn't mean I wasn't. I mean, I saw that behavior all the time while out and about on my lunch break, but I also started to expect it, so I guess that was looking for it, right?

Still, it was SO MUCH more prevalent when I would go shopping in Scottsdale than in Goodyear, etc. The people (shoppers and employees) were just so much happier and laid-back in comparison to Scottsdale. People just seemed more uptight and snobby.

I don't know, maybe it was just me labeling them as such and having an exaggerated view of their behavior?

Edit: Ok, thinking about it, a lot of my impressions came from the 20-something girls I worked with, not just random encounters while out at lunch. These girls were ALL about boob jobs, partying, drinking, sex, etc. I was told about "pimp and ho" parties (are you kidding me!? ) and things of the such all the time. These girls were getting boob jobs for graduation presents from their parents ()! These were young "ladies" who were well-immersed in the culture of Scottsdale and many grew up there. Wow. Way to teach your daughters what is important in life, right?

So I really don't think it was just me. These things were not so prevalent in other areas of the valley, though I'm sure they existed. They just weren't so front and center like in Scottsdale.
