Historic panel's vote to allow razing of building denounced

Quote:
Indeed, the commission reversed itself that day and voted to let the razing of the former Goodwill-owned building on the South Side, slated to become an Aldi, go forward. The commission in July approved a design for the Aldi store on condition that the original portion of 2628 E. Carson -- not its large rear addition -- be moved.
Mr. Morosco said he believed that the commission was manipulated by the city and the developer and that its agenda was deliberately worded so as not to alert preservationists to show up on behalf of the building.
The 2 1/2-story brick building has a wooden storefront, sloped roof and a dormer. Considered a vernacular piece by architects because it was once one of many like it built for common use, it dates to the 1870s and is now "one of precious few like it," Mr. Morosco said.
Denied a hearing on the demolition, he said, "the public and the public process were abused to ensure a result, and to me that's criminal."

That building should not be razed.

I don't understand how we can make a fuss about a 40+ year-old arena, while meanwhile we are ignoring the demolition of true historic buildings (this one being 140 years-old) that define the Pittsburgh vernacular architectural style. And to add insult to injury: it's for a suburban style building like Aldi's.

We have a great city. We don't need to sacrifice unique architectural integrity for something as commonplace as an Aldi.

Aldi's will make a fortune at that South Side location. People can't wait until it is built. Why should Giant Eagle be the only game in town? Aldi's will be smack dab in the middle of a high-density area full of senior citizens and college students. Many won't even need a car! And after paying those high rents across the street, those people will appreciate Aldi's lower prices.

I live in Germany and shop at Aldi's all the time.
Did you know that Trader Joe's is OWNED by Aldi and has been since the 1990s?
Funny how stuck-up people can be?

Trader Joe's was founded by Joe Coulombe and is currently owned by a family trust set up by the late German businessman Theo Albrecht, one of the two brothers behind the German supermarket chain Aldi.

When I shop at Aldi Nord, there's Trader Joe items on the rack.

ALDI does focus on offering low prices by stocking fewer items (including many fewer national brand items) and having fewer frills in the way the stores are operated. But it turns out that approach has universal appeal.

I'm all for Aldi's, but it should be built somewhere else so that building can be saved.

It's too late. The building is gone.

That is a shame. A loss for Pittsburgh.

What are the best things to buy at Aldi's? I've only been to one once, with a friend, and I didn't need anything. I didn't see anything I recognized. Is the stuff they sell from China?
