The centerpiece of the plaza -- to be called Allegheny Public Square ...will be several rows of evenly spaced poles, the diameter of flagpoles, which are meant "to suggest architecture" and mimic the vertical skin of the Children's Museum's main building. Inside the poles will be fog sprayers...The market house was one of 518 buildings destroyed in 1966 to build Allegheny Center Mall.

Nice to hear about the progress being made, but the history related in such articles also never fails to anger and sadden me. Oh well.

Don't let them touch the building that used to house the Pittsburgh Public Theater. That's one fine building.

I know the article says a 'meadow,' but the artist's rendition shows a huge paved square like Market Square. What is it with these paved squares? Trying to save on landscape maintenance?

Here is a full set of renderings. You can see the "meadow" portion better in some of them:

Pavement is better for holding events, placing tables, and so on--basically, it is good if you plan on having a lot of people using the space. My question would be whether they actually expect that to happen in this space, because I agree that empty pavement can look forlorn. But anyway, there is indeed a lot more green space than the one rendering would suggest.

thanks for the photos. if I recall correctly, the master plan states that there isn't enough money for maintenance and usage is high. one thing they reference is the toll the ever growing farmer's market takes on the grass. I'd guess the plan is to move that to this paved space.

Yep, I poked around and they seem confident there will be plenty of events, including the farmer's market. I guess they want to light the paved area so most events won't need dedicated lighting, they have made sure there is room for tents of a certain standard event size, and so forth.

I know this is regarding Allegheny Center, but why couldn't the city have remodeled Market Square to look more like the pics above instead of having a large concrete slab? The one sculpture is a great added touch.

Because Market Square is one big event center--when they do the farmer's market, for example, it takes up the whole space. Im other words, Market Square is a place for people to use, not look at, and it works very well for that purpose.
