Hello, everyone,
I moved to Pittsburgh recently and I was told that coop at Allendale Circle is good for temporary resident like me. However, I also heard that Allendale Circle is at a bad area.
I only see several units are for sale at this moment and it seems that units at Allendale Circle are sold out pretty quickly. Is it possible that I can get a unit in May or June?
Any comment for me? Do you know any other similar community within 20 minutes driving to Pittsburgh? Thanks for your help.

Hi Ming,
The area that you're asking about, Allendale Circle, is nice, as are the few blocks surrounding it. You'll generally see adults and kids outside both day and night, and it's a pretty area. It borders two different parks, and a city bus stops directly in front of this co-op. Parking is also not an issue there, as there are several parking lots - even if friends visit, the streets nearby are fine to park on. You also heard correctly that this area of the city, Sheraden, also has a section that has some crime problems, from Langley High school and back away from Chartiers Ave. You should avoid walking there at night, especially. There aren't really any any shops available within walking distance from this location, either, so you'll have to do your shopping by bus/car. There are decent grocery stores within a 5 minute drive. From what I know, there are units available sometimes, but they don't remain vacant for very long.

Your side of Sheredan is SAFE, heck in Allendale Circle one could roll up in a Benz or a BMW
On the other side of Sheraden Park is where MOST (maybe 90%) of the CRIME (gang/drug related shootings, stabbings, home invasions, armed robberies, ect). I was told that the bad part stretches from: Sheraden Park to Narcusiss Avenue, and I'm pretty sure that area is home to the Convictz...

I don't think thats exactly true. The section of Sheraden closest to the park bordered by Sherwood and Bergman is generally OK too. The main problems there are just some noisy neighbors and some properties that have fallen into disrepair. I don't think it starts getting shady until you get past Zephyr and past Sherwood. I should know, this little island of OK neighborhood is where I live!

I never even knew Allendale Circle existed on the other side of the park! Its sad, most Sheraden residents don't feel too comfortable straying very far from their home. There are about 4 or 5 square blocks I feel I can traverse and not have to really pay attention to my surroundings.

Default Sheraden Park

I would like to talk to people who live in and/or have lived in the Sheraden Park Co-op for a possible article about its history, its current state, the way it is run, and what it is like vis a vis the rest of Sheraden. I can be reached at djones@post-gazette.com if you are interested in talking.

Thanks for the info on Sheraden. It's not too far from Crafton where I live. I've noticed that home prices are about half what they are in Crafton, but I wasn't sure which parts were safe and which were declining. In my quest to get my kids to relocate to Pittsburgh, I'm interested in places that are safe with inexpensive housing.

If looking for inexpensive housing, I'd look at Middletown Rd or the areas of Sheraden on that side of the old high school. Crafton Heights also has a lot of nice, cheap housing. The portion of Crafton Heights bounded by Crafton Blvd and Noblestown always seems to have some really nice looking homes for cheap.

Sheraden isn't great but not nearly as bad as some would make it out to be.

Sheraden might be WORSE than you think, SlurmsMcK! there is a lot of crime there. its not the shooting gallery of pittsburgh (lincoln-larimer and homewood may be), but its not that safe a place . someone else said it - people dont stray far from their homes. thats a ridiculous way of living. but crime there could be much more if people did live like, say, squirrel hillians.
