I agree, some folks should not have a pet.
not just attacking another dog - an unleashed dog who is friendly could run up to an unfriendly leashed dog and *get* attacked. having the attacker on leash and the victim off leash is a particularly tense situation for a dog-aggressive dog. people with dogs who aren't good with other dogs shouldn't have to bear the consequences of people who let their friendly dogs run around off leash.

and i agree that those mega-long retractable leashes can be worse than no leash at all in some ways.

Noone should be scared of dogs, dogs should be allowed off leashes if they are well behaved, if not they shouldn't. Would rather play the dodge a dog game than deal with people that slowly walk through frick or down sidewalks thinking they are the only ones on the planet leaving no space for me to run by. Thanks oblivious ppl!

So, in your eyes, the "ALL DOGS MUST BE ON A LEASH" signs should reallly read "ALL WELL BEHAVED DOGS CAN ROAM FREE, ALL OTHERS MUST BE LEASHED". And you call others oblivious?

I don't own a dog but I found these tips to be interesting, especially number 1, position maters.

I would break my wrist trying to get the dog (on his leash) to leave the house after me.

the idea that you have to walk in front of your dog in order to "be the pack leader" (and a lot of millan's assertions along these lines, although many of his methods have improved over time) is based on superstition and outdated, poorly performed studies of wolves in captivity from the 1930s. position when walking has nothing to do with who is in charge and packs of feral dogs and even wolves do not exhibit the behavior of the alpha walking in front of others.
