There was a debate on city data concerning black professional nights in Pittsburgh and across the US. We were dubbed as "self segregationist" and I was called a racist! This incident is why we choose to peacefully party alone. This club catered to that Hip Hop Thug clientel. Most bar owners are blinded by dollar signs. The owners can charge $50.00 entrance fees (1-2 hundred VIP) and serve mostly top shelf liquor at a premium. Not to mention the sale of champaign which can go for a couple hundred dollars a pop.

The owner was warned by the DA last summer. She chose to cater to that crowd and someone lost their life because of it.

I also feel sorry for the victim and this should be a wake up call for parents to teach there children the spirit of discernment.
Thanks for that educational post. That is some wild stuff. wpipkins, you are the real deal and no doubt know more than anyone on these boards about the ins and outs of the scene. Fascinating stuff and something no one on here seems to know about. Thanks for the enlightenment.

Actually pretty bad. I'm a fan of his recordings but he came off as a pretty annoying want-to-be rock star in person.

What type of club would draw the black professionals? In Harrisburg, it was Jazz but that was decades ago. I'm just curious. If someone wanted to open a business that caters to black professionals, what type of business would be succcessful? Clearly if it's Hip Hop the thugs will show up. And would this owner/investor have to be black for his/her business to be accepted by black professionals?

The article says this new owner only opened this club two months ago. This is the first incident under her ownership.

Conor Oberst only feels like a "want-to-be"?

Hopes it is obvious wpipkins is in the know here. Do you really want to question someone that knows all that?

For a black professional, what about CJ's? That place looks great. What about the Savoy?

I will obviously yield to wpipkins obvious up to date knowledge of this matter.

Doesn't seem that middle class black people can have anything nice, the minute they open a club or whatever, the ghetto thugs are right behind to ruin it. Sad Example...

Hopes you are correct. There was a bouncer shot in the hand last summer. The new bar owner/renter was warned in October to not cater to the same crowd that closed the last bar.

There are plenty of businesses that cater to the young black professional. Bossa Nova and a few of the bars along 6th avenue in the cultural district have flex spaces that are rented out for special events. Most are tied to performances that are held at one of the theaters. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has improved tremendously when it comes to diverse programming for the young black professionals. In 2009 we had Jill Scott, The Color Purple, Maxwell just to name a few. Jazz used to be draw in the 90's. Younger BUPPIES require more than just jazz. We want spoken word, neo soul, meet and greets, networking sessions, and HIP HOP (new and old school).

There are different genre's within the hip hop world. Not all people listen to the same types of hip hop. The music played at a club or a venue will determine the type of crowd. I grew up in the hip hop era and I am not familiar with the national rapper who performed that night. With that information alone, I would have known to stay away.

ALL YOUNG BLACK PROFESSIONALS WILL NOT ATTEND ANY HIP HOP EVENT ADVERTISED ON WAMO. IF WAMO HAS AN AFFILIATION, GO AT YOUR OWN RISK........

A few of the institutions that cater to BUPPIES would be

Simmies Sea Food Restaurant and Bar - Homewood

Galaxie Lounge - Homewood

Holiday Inn Bar and Lounge(1st Friday Jazz and supper club) - University Center Oakland

The Rivers Club - One Oxford Center

Shadow Lounge / Ava / Blue Room - East Liberty

Monroville Convention Center - Monroeville

Pittsburgh Cultural Trust - Downtown

Hilton / Wyndam Grand - Downtown

Verona Road Giant Eagle (Black Owned) has life jazz and gospel performances in the main lobby and has open markets and car shows during the warmer months - Penn Hills

Gateway Clipper Fleet - Friday Night Dinner Jam Session

Bossa Nova - Downtown

August Wilson Center - Downtown

SOON TO OPEN (DOWES and Etta Cox's) multi level Miami inspired jazz lounge on Liberty Avenue in the heart of the Cultural District.

Middle Class black people have learned alot since the 90's. We do not advertise a good thing. Social Networking can ensure a specific demographic for a specific event.

We also have learned to use flex spaces and change locations periodically. You have to keep them (*****Z) guessing

Oddly enough, crowds that are into specific genres of music (electronic, punk, experimental etc.) do the exact same thing to avoid police and jerks that they don't want at their shows.
