Don't get me wrong, I love old yinzers, but at 23, you're much too young to live in an area surrounded by them.
Exactly, I mean it would be nice to be in a place where you could I dunno, maybe walk down the street to a bar, or a store or somethin even semi-happenin I guess you could say. But right now, with his rent going up to 840 a month + utilities he had to tell them he isnt going to re-up his lease as he just cant afford it any longer, so we got a month or so to find something somewhere !

What about any actual properties in some of these places suggested? Dont get me wrong we continue to look ourselves, but it seems like the internet is a bit of a bust in this regard.

I agree the South Side or Central North Side might be ideal--I don't know what could be found in that budget quickly, but it is certainly worth looking.

I am only 27 so not exactly old. I lived in Bellevue in my early 20s. It isn't a ghost town. It's not where you are going to go out partying. But there are stores/coffee places/restaurants that you can walk to. Plus with her son's price range he may be able to rent a nice place in Bellevue.

How many young, single twenty-somethings live in Bellevue?

Quite a few considering that tons of culinary students live there. You can watch them get on the buses in the morning. Also my buses to and from work downtown were always packed and not with a bunch of "old yinzers" as you would seem to think.

I am not arguing that there are more young people in Lawrenceville or Southside. But your description of Bellevue as a ghost town is completely inaccurate. Also the OP originally asked for a safe and affordable neighborhood. Considering her son lives in Moon Township right now I wonder if he really cares about living in a hip neighborhood.

What about Dormont? If he lives along the T he could take the NSC right to work.

Plenty of things to walk to...bars, coffee shops, restaurants, bookstores, etc.

A Craigslist search turns up plenty of options in the 500-600ish range.

Right, thats probably not his biggest priority right now as much as price and commute to his job is. Price being the fine line between affordable and steering clear of the roach motel types and the local drug depots and such. Thats where we dont quite have enough intimate knowledge of the neighborhoods to make that determination. It would be nice though that since he has to move anyways, he could find a place that has a little more I dunno "life" lets say, than Moon Twp where if you want a bottle of soda or something you have to get in your car and drive somewhere.

Again, thank you all so far for your help with this, you've already given us some good ideas and by all means if anyone has anything to add please chime in. We appreciate it. !
