Even assuming that the views of the local yokels who fled to Peters and Cranberry have some merit (which I don't), do they really think people relocating from another city are going to hear about their characterless suburban tract housing and overwhelmingly locate there? Most of the reason people do so is tax flight (supposedly), and migrating from outside the region, the real estate prices here seem so low that an outsider probably wouldn't give a crap about the taxes.

I'm not necessarily in a position to represent the views in question, but I think the basic picture they have in mind is that people are still trickling out of Allegheny County, either to the other counties, or retirement communities in the Sun Belt, or cities with more vibrant economies, or so on. Meanwhile, I don't think they really understand there are a lot of new people coming to the area (and if they thought there were at all, it would be Marcellus folks or something like that). So the idea that there is net positive migration to Allegheny County, let alone more net migration to Allegheny County than to the MSA as a whole, is a surprise.

I agree that we've known for a while that picture is incomplete at best, that in fact lots of new people are migrating to the MSA and specifically migrating to Allegheny County, and that this inflow now outweighs any outflow. But that information hasn't been widely discussed, and the inferences based on that information have been met with skepticism, and it is only really when it shows up in "official" estimates that lots of people start treating it as known facts.

It's odd that anything would auto-correct to "Negroes" in this day and age.

I have no idea why it would do that, I wasn't fully up so maybe I pressed a wrong key. That was a little awkward.

If anyone wants to see how the other counties in PA and in other states did here's a link to a page with the county populations. You also need Excel to see these.
