Hi All - we are considering relocating somewhere near Canonsburg. Right now, we live in New Hampshire. We are looking for a rural location where we could have a small farm. School system doesn't matter, and we don't care to be close to the city at all, but would like to be no more than 45 minutes from Canonsburg. What towns/areas would you recommend we look at to get a feel for the property options? We like to trail ride our horses, hike, bike, etc., so lots of open space and available trails or quiet country roads are important. Any leads you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

Canonsburg is right on the edge of the rural areas. Almost anywhere west, south, and northwest are rural settings. In our region, you can have rural property very close to populated areas. You could find the perfect place just 15 minutes away from Canonsburg.

Just to toss out a specific idea, look into areas around Raccoon State Park. Or any of the areas near state and county parks (green areas on map below) that are located west and northwest of Canonsburg. Those areas will have lots trails, etc., and the surrounding areas are very rural.

What's your price range? How many beds and baths do you want? How many acres? Do you want a property that already has a barn and fences?

Canonsburg is on the exurban fringe of Pittsburgh as it is, so just a few miles to the west puts you in a rural area.

Everything Hopes said is correct. I'd suggest Waynesburg, which is Green County. There is plenty of rural lands around it and Waynesburg is a nice little town with enough amenities for a rural lifestyle. It's also close to interstate 79 which can take you to Cannonsburg within 45 minutes. Good luck! With your criteria and the area you are looking in, no matter where you pick you can't go wrong

Wow! Thanks, very helpful. I can't wait to visit and explore a bit in the near future. We hope to stay under $350k for price range, as for acreage, we'd like at least 5 acres of open land and prefer closer to 10. Ideally, it would have a barn and fences, but we can make that happen if everything else is right. Would love a house with at least 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. We have college-age children. Does the price range sound possible for what I'm looking for? Thanks in advance for all the help.

Home prices in rural PA are rather low so you should find a lot of options for your price.

I'm sure you can find just about anything for under 350k. Western PA has a very low cost of living.
