Hmm. I'd have to disagree about suburbs being closer to city amenities than Stanton Heights. I guess it depends on where you spend time in the city. For me, even though I'm a middle-aged fart, Larryville and East Liberty around Penn Circle -- or should I say "North Shadyside" now? -- are the places to be. Just curious what suburbs you're thinking of. Shaler?

The wage tax and definitely the boxy, boring architecture in Stanton Heights, especially south of Stanton Ave, give me some pause about moving there.

Cheers.

You could go to Morningside, and get this within your price range. I like the look of it, although it's too small for me.

I think you are going to wind up on the same cul de sac up North as Steel City! Perhaps one of your will by CoPanut's place when he moves to Dormont.

I like Morningside but ... it is just a little too far from everything. Regent Square is also just a little too far but it has a better business district and is close to Frick Park. Then again, Morningside is a little cheaper.

The guy who was asking for recs was looking at Stanton Heights. I'm not a huge fan of Morningside, but I think it is nominally better than Stanton Heights in just about every way (unless being a bit closer to Upper Lawrenceville is that important to you).

I think housing prices in the city have spiked recently. If you have a more modest budget then you really need to have an open mind about which neighborhood to live in. I also think that inventory is pretty low in some areas.

I wasn't knocking the recommendation just giving my two cents about Morningside. For that price that is the best you are going to do in a decent city neighborhood.

You'd barely cash flow or make enough to have a reserve. Might not be a bad long term investment, but I think 3+ units under the same roof makes the most sense for a rental.

If you thought 77 was bad... Try the 74D & 79 or just about any of the Northside buses which go through Brighton Rd-North Charles St. Avoid some of the 30's too which go into the South Hilltop.

I've never ridden the 77 or 79. My girlfriend had to ride the 74 for a few months and it was a terrible experience for her. She is short and fairly young looking, so the kids coming from Shuman Juvenile Detention Center would sometimes give her grief. She said the bus drivers were usually too scared to do anything about it. I'm really not a fan of having a bus stop right at the detention center.

I'm not sure what you're talking about with the north side buses. The 13, 16, and 17 all go down Brighton Road and I've never had any issues with the people on them. The 15, which I think is the one you're referring to, does have a noticeably different ridership, but even my few negative experiences on the 15 were simply unpleasant, not hostile. I haven't had any experiences on the north side buses that would cause me to warn someone against riding them.
