I thought it had already been mentioned in this thread, but you will be able to ride the bus for free:

Transit Agreement

"All University of Pittsburgh students, faculty, and staff may ride all Port Authority buses, trolleys, and inclines within Allegheny County. Simply tap your valid and current Panther Card to the smart card target located on the Port Authority vehicle to ride fare-free. Family members and guests must pay the full fare."

I myself am on a budget. I just signed a lease for $1000 a month for a studio in Oakland! I am relocating for graduate school, but the market was so competitive around the school and being so unfamiliar with the area, i just took whatever I could get. Good Luck!

It takes a special breed of scumbag to exploit students with jacked-up rent for crappy apartments. I've lived and studied in other countries, where the businesses around universities cater to students with lower rent and lower-cost amenities, knowing students are on budgets. Hell, even IUP is good about this. In Oakland, they charge a ton for rooms in buildings that should be knocked down because they know that whatever the cost, someone will pay.

In South Oakland, that special breed is called Slumlord Bob.

The tenants in South Oakland are no prizes either.

And if the young people don't want to pay the price, with free transit available they can move to Carrick or North Side and pay a whole lot less.

I think the real problem is that the students really don't have much respect for the money, they aren't the ones who earned it in the first place that was their parents.

Or student loans. You're right though, college kids as a whole don't have any real sense of money, and they'll use their seemingly endless line of credit from student loans or their parents wallets to get whatever they need. And since it seems like every other kid is doing it, it seems like a safe bet. And hey, even jacked up Oakland rents are a steal compared to the dorms and campus-owned apartments.

Keep in mind that college kids will cram into a place, too. Rent might be $2,000 for that crappy house, but they have 6 people crammed into it.
