Great ideas! I'll research the ones everyone suggested. Keep them coming.

Flat is okay if it's near water. I just don't want great plains flat.

I'm hoping to leave within the next few weeks, no later than early October.

Grand Rapids, MI. Great little city (Home of Gerald Ford), on the lake. Lots of great wineries and breweries there. Great beaches.

Art Prize starts on the 18th! ArtPrize

About 2 hrs closer than Traverse City.

I second the mention of Shepardstown, WV. we were just there a few months ago. you may not find a cabin in town but may have more luck heading a few minutes east closer to Harpers Ferry and the Shenandoah River.

Asheville, NC is larger but feels small and offer plenty to do outdoors, quaint shops, etc... I'm sure there are nice little towns in that area.

Traverse City is a great place as well, along with most every town along the east coast of Lake Michigan. Check out the drive from Ludington to Leland. It's full of hills, beaches, and many great little towns.

I agree that Traverse City is beautiful but it is a long drive to get there. Also, it tends to get significantly colder being that far north so if it were me I would look into the weather (when I was there in May it was in the 30's up there while it was in the 70's in Pgh.) Northern MI is surprisingly very hilly, the drive from Ludington to Traverse City kind of reminded me of being in the mountains of WV

I'll offer up Greenbrier state forest, and Greenbrier River Retreat for cabins near nifty small towns in the Appalachians of West Virginia. Lewisburg has probably the best mainstreet of the region, but the others aren't bad. White Sulphur Springs up the road has the Greenbrier resort, plus its own little main street with a few cafes. Lots of beautiful hiking in the area, particularly if you go during fall foliage. Ping me if you decide to head that way, and I can make more specific recommendations. It's about 4 hours from Pittsburgh proper.

Damascus, VA is very nice and by the Mount Rogers Recreation area. The Virginia Creeper Trail (bicycling) AND the Appalachian trail go through there so there are some interesting places catering to the hiking and biking populations. At the other end of the creeper trail is Abington - larger and a really nice town as well.

Greyson Highlands state park has some very rustic cabins.
Look for cabin websites in Greyson or Washington counties.

North of Asheville just off the Blue Ridge Parkway is the beautiful town of Blowing Rock. It is however somewhat upscale with pricey antique and gift shops.. Lots of camping, cabins, hiking nearby. Grandfather mountain a short distance away.
