Considering this weeks forecast the zoo might not be very fun.

zoos in north america should be commended for strengthening the bloodlines of some animals! if it werent for zoos, possibly there wouldnt be preserves, and if it werent for preserves, some animals, like the beautiful great cats, would be perilously close to extinction.

i am not a fan of zoos only because i cant see things as close up as id want to.

As zoos go, I think the one in Pittsburgh is pretty good in terms of how the enclosures are for most animals. The last really old school things (the 1930s-era bear enclosures in the back) are set to be replaced if I remember right. More importantly though, this zoo has done some great work in terms of preservation of particularly African Elephants and Amur Tigers. Baby elephants and tiger cubs have come around regularly over the past several years.

Still, I can understand aversion in general. Plus, this week would not be much fun out there. An interesting place to see not too far away (though too far for a short-term visitor really, it's a couple hour drive) with much more open format is The Wilds in Ohio. 10,000 acres (of reclaimed mining land, no less).

They are very involved in the conservation of the green sea turtle as well.

When I was last there the bear enclosures were closed and under reconstruction. We do have a really nice zoo. But it is really too cold for walking aorund there this week. With the possible exception of the Monkey building. And I see monkeys all day every day at work...

Thumbs up Trip Update

Update from my trip....

We had a great and successful trip! Yes, it was cold (0 degrees @ its coldest) and it snowed (yay!). We did a variety of things on our off time. Pittsburghers you are so very nice, courteous and welcoming! I am looking into opportunities to serve in another location and Pittsburgh is top on my list! What I love and miss about city living is no matter what the weather there are people out and about!!!

Went to Mt Washington, Ice skating in the 0 degree temp. Double Wide Grill, Spaghetti Warehouse, The Library, Hemingway's Cafe, South Side shopping, Cathedral of Learning, Andy Warhol Museum to name just a few....

Thanks Pittsburgh!!!

Go Steelers!!!!
