Are you sure about that. I could have sworn that C3 Mall was built by the Debartolo's, and that Simon didn't come into the picture until the mid 90's.
Two other points: I'd hardly say that the mall is set up to attract Black shoppers. A lot of Mon Valley residents shop there, and quite a few Black teens from those places hang out there, but Monroeville Mall is the place where Black people go when they want to go to a mall. The East End and Eastern suburbs have the largest Black population in the county, and they shop at MM. Second, the Waterfront is indeed killing C3. A huge percentage of the folks shopping at the Waterfront would be at C3, and the adjacent shopping areas had the Waterfront not been built. If not for the fact that my blood boils every time I have to sit while trains block the entrance to the Waterfront, I'd probably never go to C3. As the other poster noted, the new always kills the old. East Hills killed East Liberty. Monroeville killed East Hills and Eastland. Ross Park killed Allegheny Center, and put NorthWay at death's door. C3 definitely hurt South Hills Village in the 80's, but SHV's superior location eventually saved it.

Okay, I don't usually jump into the racial things on this board but some people really say weird things.
Does it matter where African Americans shop? All the malls are public and all residents are free. You can and will shop wherever you want. If there's a larger population of black shoppers at Monroeville Mall, that's fine, but must we say "they all" shop at Monroeville?

No -- and yes. In the context that this comment was delivered, it's useless. But I like knowing where black youth are shopping -- because I won't bother going there.
And there is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with that.
As a middle aged suburban white woman, that pretty assures me that the stores there are not geared to my tastes.
I would fully expect a car loaded with young people to take a look at where I shop and run in the other direction, too.

i was just out century 3 yesterday
it seems like every other store is empty
the dairy queen is gone and there is only a few places left in the food court
it is bad when the arcade and a tux shop are in storefronts in the middle of the food court
all the clothes stores that are left are all geared to h.s. kids
where do us 30 somthings have to shop?
i watched century 3 from the day it opened till yesterday
and it is a shame how it has turned in to a dump
and im sure its only a matter of time till it turns into a flea market like eastland mall
or upmc century 3
as for the rest of 51 from route 88 to century 3
if levitski would sell off all the property in brentwood/baldwin
and clean it up it would look much nicer
Empty stores may be on rise at Century III Mall

Now you've hit the nail on the head! This joker is single handedly responsible for the crappiness of Rt. 51 from CoGo's to Brownsville Rd.

I remember reading an article a few weeks ago (which I can't find now, or else I'd link) that the elder Levitski has passed away, and his children are trying to either sell or redevelop most of the properties he had.

I do, but I don't shop here. I drive out to Walnut Creek to shop, get my hair cut that sort of thing...
I used suburban not in locality way, but as a type -- like suburban soccer mom.
