Hey we have some grit, and age n'at, and more tolerable mild winters

That's a shorter distance than Cambridge to Boston's downtown or Brooklyn to Manhattan so...

Worst case you catch the bus by the overlook and it takes you extra time to get downtown (or at least there wasn't an express line when I was there).

Just really depends on the street you're on and the winter snow/ice when it comes to living up there.
Not to mention places within a 10 minute walk of South Hills Junction or Palm Garden T stops which have a direct route to the North Shore. The only problem with this is that from Palm Garden to the North shore stops the trains average about 3-5 mph, so driving or ziplining would still be the better option.

Sounds like the OP will like Southside or Lawrenceville the most...SS is a flat bike ride or easy bus ride downtown and despite the party atmosphere centered on Carson on the weekends, at all other times it's one of Pittsburgh's nicest neighborhoods. But she definitely needs to visit all of these places as many have totally different vibes and ease of connection to the North Shore.

IMO, buying a car to get to work on the North Shore would be a huge waste of resources if you want to live in an exciting area anyways. Plan on taking a bus downtown and walking the bridge, or transferring to a (free) T ride under the river on the extremely cold or rainy days. If you're really lucky you'll like the North Side and you can just walk, but all of the areas mentioned will have frequent bus service downtown during the likely times you will be commuting.

With all the money you'd save without a car, you could easily rent a car or take Amtrak (or even fly from time to time) whenever you wanted to visit your family.

Southside might be too "college" for them, which OP said didn't want.

Personally if I ever moved back to Pittsburgh I'd choose the Southside no question, but then again I'd probably go car free again and don't mind the noise. One downside to the SS is you always have to worry about drunks sideswiping your car parked on the street and it's a pain to find parking sometimes.

Apartments on the Southside go quickly so you'll have to keep checking for listings.

I must say it was so nice to be able to live a few blocks off E. Carson and walk to work downtown.

A lot of folks don't like to walk through the Armstrong Tunnel, a little bit of truck exhaust disturbs them.

You can take 10th St. bridge to 2nd Ave. and go past the jail to Blvd of the Allies. No need to go through the tunnel if you don't want to go through it.

2nd Avenue is a long walk around if you are heading toward the US Steel or Gulf Bldg.

Palm Garden to the last station on North Shore is only eight stops and takes ten minutes at most.

Who said anything about the US Steel or Gulf? Basically it was an aside anyway since the OP is going to be on the Northside.

If you are choosing between South Side and Lawrenceville, I'd pick Lawrenceville. I know a couple who live a block or two over from East Carson Street in SouthSide. It's so dangerous there, and they plan to move.

They were almost mugged one night a few months ago.

They also recently had gunshots right in front of their place...
Suspect in South Side abduction found shot, dead after Munhall standoff | Local News - WTAE Home
"Police said the incident began overnight when a woman texted a friend to report she was being abducted from a home on South 22nd Street in the South Side Flats. Moffatt said gunshots were fired into the street and at the house, and the woman was taken away at gunpoint, with the weapon held to her head."
