Not sure why your quote is so high for a studio apt move so close. a studio is the same as an efficiency right? Or do you mean big studio?
They usually quote by how many rooms & the amount of time, 2-3 men, I believe they have a 3.5hr minimum charge. They'll usually ask about large items-appliances etc.
Maybe alot of stairs, my dad always said people forget they live on the fourth floor

It's just a small studio. On their site I entered in what furniture I have (1 queen bed, 1 desk, 4 chairs, 1 kitchen table, 1 tv stand, 1 nightstand, and an uncounted number of boxes which they estimated to be 20 boxes). This is what I got back in an email (plus a PDF of a quote):

"Our minimum timings are set with the P.U.C....Below is a breakdown of our four man minimum rate:

Our four man rate is $145.00 an hour. We carry a minimum of three hours of labor, plus one hour of travel. The hour travel is used to get to you, and then back from you. The only other direct cost is a Fuel Surcharge of $19.90. This brings minimum cost to, $599.90. Once the minimum of three hours have been used, we go into fifteen minute increments of $36.25."

I live on the 8th floor, but there are 2 big elevators. No one will have to deal with stairs. And I'll be moving to a place on the 1st floor.

That is your problem, call them you don't need 4 men you only need 2 or 3. I am sure they will work with you.

It's not worth it to me. If I had a house, I'd be way more willing to spend whatever the going rate is. With just cheap Ikea furniture, I really don't think my stuff is worth an expensive move. I was willing to pay $200-ish. I decided I am getting a cheap U-Haul and having a few friends who will help drive and lift my stuff for free. Thanks to jay5835 for the U-Haul info!
