We are looking to stay at Friendship Suites and I wanted to know ya'll's opinion of the neighborhood. It is awful close to East Liberty but the street on Google maps is gorgeous. Any help is, as usual, greatly appreciated.

Friendship Suites

That address is very much in Friendship, and I think it would seem that way if you were there in person. I'm not sure how many details you want about Friendship, but it is a unique neighborhood--very much in a state of transition, but also very beautiful, and in a very central location. I personally feel quite safe there, but the standard city advice (e.g., try to avoid walking around alone at night) would apply.

You are very welcome.

By the way, that place is just three short blocks from The Sharp Edge (down Friendship to the corner at St Clair), a place with a truly amazing beer selection and a decent menu. You might want to check it out if you are looking for a meal and/or drink within walking distance.

You just hooked us up with our first night's meal. We are driving 770 miles next Sat. form my Mom's in Bham Al. We will probably arrive late evening (can't wait to drive through Fort Pitt Tunnel). I think we will try to do Primanti's on Sun. So, Sharper Edge it is

Friendship has a great deal of those "bohemian" and "gay artist"- types that we were talking about in another thread, jinxd.

In fact, I imagine it's a little pocket that has one of the highest populations of such types! BrianTH was dead on, although I don't think the neighborhood sees a lot of riff raff, it's definitely not FAR from riff raff, so use good judgment and be sensible.

While we are recommending awesome little places in Friendship, be sure to check out Quiet Storm! It's a bohemian coffee house that serves vegan food (I think we talked about this before, actually!)

The Quiet Storm | 5430 Penn Ave | Pittsburgh | Great Coffee | Vegan & Vegetarian Food

Okay, I think it's actually in Garfield, but they are side-by-side.

I definitely second this ... Quiet Storm is very representative of the new hipster/bohemian Friendship. My favorite Indian place in Pittsburgh is also up on Penn Avenue (Peoples, at the corner with Evaline). And my favorite Italian place is just across Liberty (Alexander's, at Winebiddle).

And there are a bunch more places nearby I would recommend in Bloomfield, East Liberty, and Shadyside ... it really is a convenient location!

Yep, Penn is the border between Friendship and Garfield, so it just depends which side of the street you are on.
