You're not riding past the worst parts. Just past the Rivers Casino along the river is an abomination of tents, probably necessitating a new zip code pretty soon. Even worse is near the Giant Eagle on North Side. Also along river near the expensive Heinz Lofts. It's a legit safety and economic concerned to all Pittsburgher for many reasons.

The downtown shelter officially opened November 22, which probably accounts for some of the decrease.

No. Our cost-of-living is not particularly high as long as you aren't trying to rent in a particularly trendy area. I suspect addiction and/or mental illness are the reasons behind the vast majority of our residents experiencing homelessness at the moment.

If there is an increase in addiction in Western PA; I feel for you. I hope you dont turn into Philly with its Kensington nabe, and a few blocks over its nice and yuppy.

Pittsburgh has always had a homeless population. The homeless has always had encampment areas in and around downtown. Removal of these tent cities has always been controversial but necessary. In the 1990s the city removed from homeless camps for the MLB Allstar games.

A young child from the Northside was murdered along the river in the 90s. The suspect was a homeless man. The encampments along the river was removed then as well.

Homelessness in Pittsburgh is nothing new.

You think that BLM is the cause of the homeless issue in and around downtown? If you want to be petty I will counter by thanking Derek Chauvin for this mess. You sound pathetic and confused. Your blaming a LGBTQ organization for the US homelessness problem. Homelessness has been a issue for decades now but you blame the “darkie” since it’s a convenient scapegoat. Get over yourself.

Nah, opportunistic losers that caused violence, burnt it down, rioted, looted, etc…, to the tune of $2B and cries to defund the police caused the mess…and the fraud that is BLM was well before Chauvin. “Stay Woke stay angry” came from them.
