This is probably the usual nothing burger, but I hope he starts putting pressure on the BS! UPMC is a scam.

Yep, nothingburger.

Interesting how you always only mention UPMC. How are UPMC, Highmark, Pitt, etc.., a scam, and please be specific?….as he’s said before he’s going after all of them.

Do you think anyone will ever learn that companies don't pay taxes, including non-profits? They'll simply pass it on to consumers of their products and services. So, if you think higher education and health-care are expensive now, wait for the inflation and tax increases.

Not going to disagree, but maybe some of these big money monopolies can give a little to the city that provides them a place to take. everyone's money. It isn't like UPMC is some great ambassador to the citizens of our city. You know they threatened something that is unprecedented in the entire USA by not accepting Blue Cross customers. I don't think anyone on here gets that. It is hard to grasp if you weren't involved in it. If it didn't affect you individually then why learn about what was really going on. The entire health industry watched that case. I am talking about giant hospitals in NYC, DC, LA and all over the country that are in the industry. Do you know what the word unprecedented means? It means it has NEVER been done before. NEVER! The world watched that unfold and eventually UPMC pulled the plug on their aggressive act. They are not good ambassadors to the citizens here. They are a greedy cooperation that has been caught over billing and more. Tax exemption? There is a reason for that status. Look it up. They are supposed to be for the good of a community to get that status.

At the end of the day, you are correct though. The expense will be passed on to us due to their monopoly status and with Highmark in trouble, it only gets worse for us here in Allegheny County and really all of PA. Regardless, it needs to be pointed out that UPMC is a pretty disgusting organization. I do go there however. I have very good doctors and they are top in the area. It isn't their fault what goes on with the greedy MBA's that look for their multi-million dollar salaries and ways to create more wealth for themselves.

this isn't about income tax, its about non profits, universities and religious institutions all being exempt from property tax, which yes is a loophole that needs to be addressed. Anyone that ******es about their taxes being too high for their home, should seriously be in favor of generating more property taxes through these entities.

I'm not for more taxes generally and understand giving special consideration to non-profits but at a certain financial level some of those considerations should go away. Something like property taxes directly effect the local area its situated and has a direct effect (lets not get into public spending waste). Waive some companies federal tax obligation and be honest even UPMC isn't going to move the federal deficit but that property tax funding might make some impact.

Agreed. Im pretty fiscally conservative and all for a free market. But lets call a spade a spade when it comes to some of the organizations that hide behind the guise of non profit while generating a 1/4 Billion of profits in a year.

Drive around Oakland and look how much property is not on the tax rolls. Its pretty astonishing.

Except UPMC isn’t a monopoly and that’s already been proven to you. You simply don’t like them, but please do provide proof that UPMC and these companies are a monopoly and please be specific?

Except those doctors work for UPMC and know exactly what goes on and they choose to work there because they know that’s how it works, and not just there.

Just not UPMC. Johns Hopkins, Washington Hospital Center and Anne Arundel Medical Center, as well as many others to include a couple multi-state medical practices, have went to war with Blue Cross the last couple years.

So it looks like it might be a trend.

I don't know how it really ended up shaking out since I'm on Medicare and BC/BS is my secondary insurance. I get monthly statements from them detailing the payments that have been made.
