Perhaps you need to go and learn the meaning of the free exercise clause yourself. It states that Congress...........not the states.........can make no law, etc......... Actually, a state (or municipality, for that matter) naming a religion would be perfectly constitutional, but the federal government cannot do it.
Another reason you may not be conservative #792: lack of training in the Constitution?
Sorry, but that's wrong. No state can make any law that goes against the Constitution. And that is exactly what a state or municipal law regarding any religion would do - violate the 1st Amendment.

The President's job is NOT to entertain any group of Americans that would like for him to circumvent the law and ignore the U.S. Constitution.-----

No presidential statement or White House press briefing was held on it. In fact, all that can be found about it on the official White House Web site is the Dec. 17 announcement and one-paragraph text of President Obama's Executive Order 12425, with this innocuous headline: "Amending Executive Order 12425 Designating Interpol as a public international organization entitled to enjoy certain privileges, exemptions, and immunities."In fact, this new directive from Obama may be the most destructive blow ever struck against American constitutional civil liberties. No wonder the White House said as little as possible about it.
The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.

I don't understand people that keep trying to make this about freedom of religion, when it is not.
No one has said they can't practice their religion and they have done so for many years at that location.
It is about an in your face $100 monument at that particular location. Once and for all it is about LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. Put it anywhere else and you probably would not have heard a peep.
But then, they knew the reaction they would get when they made the proposal.
IT'S NOT A MONUMENT!IT'S A COMMUNITY CENTER!
Swimming pool
Meeting rooms
Classrooms
Auditorium
Library
Art Studios
Gym
Basketball Courts
Restaurant
Culinary School
Child care facility A Sept. 11 memorial and meditation room
And of course, a Muslim prayer space, which is the only aspect of this project that has all your panties in a damn wad.
So why don't you stop pretending that this is only about "Location Location Location". Anywhere this group tried to build in lower Manhattan, you people would raise hell. Stop taking the rest of us for stupid by denying it.

Well, it pretty much is. The 1st makes it clear that you can't discriminate on basis of religion. Saying that a specific congregation can't meet peacefully on their property is discrimination. Per definition.

If it had been 5 blocks away, Newt G. and cohorts would have tried to use it as a wedge issue as well, and you know it. Bigots are now going nuts about a mosque in Temecula, California, and this debate is egging them on. Hell, the AFA has mustered up the courage to say publicly what a lot of them at least had the decency to keep to themselves: That all mosque construction should be stopped.
Do Americans have the courage of their convictions?
It does not matter ONE LICK whether city voters approve or not. Opinions that DISREGARD our constitution are irrelevant and intolerable in this country.
Thank G-D we have a President who puts the U.S. Constitution FIRST and not public opinion polls.
The tryranny of the majority has often been used to support discriminatory acts against Americans who many perceive as "different" throughtout American history.
"President Barack Obama told CNN Saturday that in defending the right of Muslims to build a community center and mosque near ground zero in a speech Friday night, he was "not commenting on the wisdom" of the project but trying to uphold the broader principle that the government should treat "everyone equal, regardless" of religion."
Eww........At least they are building a gay bar next door to it in mockery. I'll stop by for a drink there next time I'm in Manhattan. Muslim's around the world must be laughing at the US right now. Good job Obama!
BTW -- have you forgotten that our country began on Freedom of Religion?
Really, can you be so naive? Can you really think that 9/11 was about our religion? No, it was about our oppression of Global Trade to benefit American based Multi-National Businesses. President Bush made it about religion so he could go back to Iraq.
Muslims have made contributions to Western cultures and sciences since before the Middle Ages. This country is full of Muslims, many converts as well as those born to it, here AS CITIZENS.
I visited Ground Zero while we were there last year. Muslims were as present as any other people. Why shouldn't they have a church?

It's as if the more we change, the more we stay the same. Republicans seem to want to lock us in the mire of days gone by, when intolerance was accepted and commonplace. It makes me want to puke.
Because the Muslim countries want Israel blown off the face of the planet.
Isreal has only itslef to blame for many of its problems. It forcibly removed Palistenian families from their homes during the creation of the Isreali state, and continues to deprive these people of the most basic human and civil rights. As long as Isreal provides no justice for the Palistenian people it will not live in peace with its neighbors.
