The study in the OP is total bull. Anyway, the reddest of the red states (Mississippi, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Alabama off the top of my head) tend to be much more optimistic, and much more charitable then their northern and more liberal counterparts.
While, the more liberal states rank near the bottom, so pull another one.
And to just add to that....even a moderate liberal wrote an entire book a few years ago and concluded that conservatives actually donate more to both secular and religious causes than liberals do, amongst other things:

When people brag about themselves and personal attributes one should always wonder about that for which they are compensating. This is what makes me suspicious of liberals, who appear to be as a group, to be constantly reminding anyone and everyone of their supposed intellectual superiority.

Agree and it was that way with me. You tend to go with what you learn in school and then you get out into the real world and realize the difference between right and wrong and what is good and bad for our country.
Liberals voted for 0bama, and they are all scratching their little wooden heads now, and wondering what the hell happened.
What do YOU WANT to happen? Everyone KNOWS what happened with the right in charge. I am not willing to go back to what has been proven to be the failures of the right.

So then why doesn't the liberal ideology translate well? I mean, why can't liberal talk succeed the way that conservative talk does?
You really need to ask yourself these questions.
Personally, I think modern liberalism sprouts from a need to feel that you are above the crowd and that you have somehow evolved intellectually beyond the rest of us. You somehow believe that you think on a higher plane than everyone else, especially the rural masses.
