Of course it should be kept but it very badly abused. Just this summer I was in Maine and I heard on the radio 2 guys bought a pallet of bottled water. Loaded it into the back of a pick up truck, Then proceeded to drive around the building dump out every bottle onto the ground and take the m-t's back for a a 5 cent a piece deposit. THis kinda crap is why people get pissed

If they had half a brain they would have sold the water for 20 cents a bottle at work sites and made quadruple that. Maybe their subpar math skills and level of ingenuity are what is keeping them from finding gainful employment. That's a hard way to "abuse" welfare. Not the sharpest tools in the shed if you ask me.

Pitying the poor is not compassion. Giving handouts breeds dependency. Offering a hand up and out encourages self-sufficiency.

Our farmers produce an abundance of food in this nation. There is no reason for anyone to ever go hungry. However, what is not earned is not appreciated and usually wasted or worse. We have a responsibility to feed our hungry in this country but those who need aid also have a personal responsibility to society to be more than consumers.

I think we need to cut back on food stamps. We could probably cut it by 25% without anyone who actually needs them suffering. The key is figuring out who actually needs them, and when they stop needing them. Giving away money is tricky business.

Default We're screwed if we work or unemployed with GOP

We're screwed if we work or unemployed with GOP

So we work with less minimum wage and don't eat, or get laid off and don't eat.
Why doesn't the GOP Party just be honest about it, and sponsor a bill in Congress to reenact slavery?
Frankly, we'd be better off. At least our owners would be obligated to put a roof over our heads and food in our bellies.

It's called private charity. Churches, soup kitchens, food banks, and food drives would take care of the less fortunate in our communities. It would also encourage those who have hit a rough patch to look even harder for work. I'm ashamed to say that a very close relative of mine has been collecting unemployment for months. He "makes" more on unemployment than he would busting his butt at one or two jobs. He turned down full time opportunities since he wouldn't bring in as much money.

I'm not saying we should completely eliminate welfare programs, but they need reforms and much stricter regulations.

Yes, I do.

And for the elderly, there is really no other option. However, when it comes to being "disabled", I take exception with a LOT of people in this category. I personally know at least four people who are "disabled" and are perfectly capable of working. Certainly, there are those who are not. But if you weed out the posers and liars and cheats, then you have more than enough to go around for the people who TRULY NEED the help. I am not opposed to helping people who truly NEED IT, but I have no patience for those who sit around and do nothing and pretend to be more disabled than they truly are.

Listen, my mother knew a man who had been hurt in an industrial accident when he was a young man and lost BOTH of his legs and BOTH of his arms but it did not stop him from finishing college *and* going on to law school and practicing law - later becoming a judge - for more than 40 years.

Don't EVEN talk to me about people who can't work because they have an "inconvenient" disability. They are simply using that to get out of it.

I have heard of some people who cheat disability, just like cheating pell grants, and everything else, and there needs to be more reform in that area. With that said though, most people I know of who are on disability are either old and really can't move around that well, are injured veterans or are both.

Right. That all worked so well before food stamps, that malnutrition was a huge problem in this country.
