It was my general thought/presumption that most people do not have/own guns - -especially in a urban area (vs. farm country where I can easily assume people have guns). During multiple conversations with my neighbors over the last year or so I realized that most of them do own firearms.
Not sure if my area is an exception or if my assumptions were wrong. When I mentioned to one of my neighbors that I have none, they were extremely surprised and suggested 'I get on it.' I live in a large city, not somewhere isolated or in farm country and in a relatively safe neighborhood and owning firearms never came to my mind.
So this bring the question. Does your household owns firearms?
Do you think each household should? Do many of your neighbors/friends own firearms?
I doubt my current neighbors own firearms, my new ones will as most farmers do.
Should most households? Not unless they are willing to practice the mindset and the responsibility for their decision. Most sheeple are not willing to so do. We were once a nation of riflemen. Now we are largely a nation of whimps dependent upon dialing 911 to repremand argumentative children. Sad, very sad.
Honestly they should return to teaching basic marksmanship and firearms safety in the schools. This would help avert many of the negligent "accidents" with firearms in the home today.
"Safe" is a relative term reserved for periods of history with a stable economy and a government in which the people have confidence. Introduce social upheaval and there are no "safe" neighborhoods.
An hour long video from Col. Jeff Cooper on the defensive mindset addressing a group of physicians:
No. Owning a firearm is stupid and opens your house up to endless potential for drama. Knowing how to use one, though, is imo a life skill.
really? then I take it if some perp breaks into your home you are not willing to defend your life...except if the police are there to save you.
firearms are nothing more than a tool and to used correctly it requires training like any other tool requires. firearms are not a life skill, as I do use and carry one, as do my wife and 10 year old daughter.
Every household should be equipped with at least one good firearm. This is vital for self defense. Real life is not like the movies where some mad slasher invades the victim's home and takes forever to accomplish his task. Real violence is over and done with in seconds so you can't rely on the police for protection. In most situations the police arrive well after the fact just in time to clean up the mess. Anyone who relies on them is gambling with their lives and those of their loved ones.

Don't have one, very few people around here do. I live in a major suburban area with one of the lowest crime rates in the nation.
well, with NY requirements to protect oneself, I could understand why you dont own a firearm.
after all, the politicians and cops dont want the law abiding public to outgun them.
why else is there any victim disarmanent laws?
