That's detrimental to the country and un-American!

I don't seem to recall the Iroquois bending over backwards to assimilate to Algonquin culture as they moved into the Northeast. Nope. They pretty much just steamrolled over Algonquin territory capturing women, torturing men and burning down villages. That was the Native American socio-political situation in New York and the northern Appalachians when the English arrived.

Mr. Joshua !!! ... BRAVO !

Indeed your last sentence is a gem of wisdom !!!

As a Proud German American I can definitely relate to your excellent post !

The "Patriotic America Citizens" of this nation must "Wake Up" before it becomes another Britian ... Insane Multi-Culturalism has without a doubt all but erased the vast greatness of these once proud and tremendously resolute British Isles !!!

The acute madness of so many of the Brit Career Politicians has truly been the cause of Englands undoing !!!

Thanks Mates / Cheerio / Old Sgt. Lamar

We should listen.

I believe he's right. We have made the same mistake. We have become a society of feel gooders who, on the surface, wants to make everybody happy. In reality, we have lost what we held most dear; unity as a whole, brought together under the words: "One nation, under God".

People used to come here wanting to be American. For a while now, people come here wanting to be Mexican, Chinese, or whatever, in America. That's not what diversity is. It's acknowedging and celebrating differences, but as a whole, we should still be one and we're not.

People don't want to be American anymore. They just want to live here.

What do you all think?

Hell yes. Have you been to London lately? It is chock full of Arabs and is a far cry from what it was even 30 years ago. If vacationing UK, go to Ireland or Scotland, as they are still nice places. The people are great and the scenery is fantastic. If you want to visit an Arab city, go to London. At least it is a little safer than Cairo today.

There's two schools of thought on the issue. These are the Melting Pot philosophy and the Multicultural philosophy. The Melting Pot has America as one central culture that reflects an infinite number of the past heritages of its people. Christmas trees from the Germans, Chow Mein from the Chinese, and Vodka from Eastern Europe. Yet everyone sees himself as American. Neighborhoods, schools, even romantic relationships are integrated.

Multiculturalism has America as seperate, distinct cultures interacting together. For most of America's history the alleged objective has been to make America a melting pot. Often this melting pot has been more lipservice than actual practice, that is, only certain people (white people, and sometimes not all of the white people) could gain admittance to the main culture. But then came the Civil Rights Revolution of the 50s and 60s, and in the subsequent decades entry into the larger American culture has been granted to essentially everyone. No longer do certain demographics have their "place" in the American society. Men are nurses. Women are CEOs. We now have a black President.

However full and complete interaction with other demographics can be scary for some. Many people want to stay "with their own kind". Consequently multiculturalism has gained traction.

The trouble with mulitculturalism is that some ethnicities will not have the same rate of financial success as other ethnicities. Different cultures put different values on life's direction. Some cultures put high value on education, for example, others less so. Also, being even somewhat out of the larger culture can potentially have negative effects to financial success. Simply being in complete tune with the larger culture can have merit.

So the bottom line is, we can live in a multicultural society but it would mean that we all must understand that a lack of financial success in one culture does not necessarily mean there is something amiss. It does not necessarily indicate discrimination, nor does it necessarily mean a subculture that is "failed". Simply put, success means different things to different cultures. And this has to be understood for a multicultural society to function harmoniously.

The American Indians is a superb example.

At first they said "It's just a few immigrants, there's room for us all"
Later they said "It brings new supplies and trade it's good." Although some said the ongoing tide of immigrants would be bad, they were often viewed as alarmists.
Eventually the Indians realized they'd made a mistake. That by opening their door to a new language, culture and people they'd invited an invasion. When they did finally take up arms they didn't stand a chance.

Of course if we don't learn from history we are doomed to repeat it.

Any nation should educate their people in only one language. They can of course teach more, but none of this language immersion to keep foreigners comfortable. And it would be sound policy to say that at no point will your nation be more than 5% foreign born. Any time it approaches 5% immigration should be halted until it drops down to 3%.

Western countries won't learn the failure of multiculturalism until it results in widespread bloodshed, akin to a civil war.

You people must live in a different America than I do, I don't see this country turning into a different country at all. Why don't you travel to these other countries, such as China, Mexico, Pakistan & then come back here & try to tell us how this country is so similar to those. You can't.

Great Britain had a culture before non-British came to their country.

American culture is a conglomeration of many cultures. I'm not a big multicultural guy. But what is American culture?

What are we asking from immigrants in this thread?

Actually, Britain has been receiving immigrants for a long time ....

the Huguenots, the Jews (1860 - 1900), Irish, Italian (1930s), Caribbean (1950s), Kenya, India & Pakistan (1960s ..... )

There was immigration and movement of people in Europe for centuries.

I still don't understand what some people are asking from immigrants in this thread.
