Plus I think it's kind of interesting that McChrystal didn't burn that much over the things he got caught at. He must know something pretty damning to someone, I imagine.
Only the M-16A1 had fully automatic firing capabilities. That was changed to a three-round burst with the M-16A2 and all subsequent versions of the weapon.
The XM29 OICW, which is expected to replace the M-16, will also have semi-auto and three-round burst capability.
yup after vietnam they changed because they were going through ammo like crazy but then again animal mother with a M60 was the ultimate badass
The M-60E1 of the 1960s and 1970s was a lot different from today's M-60E3. First and foremost, the M-60E1 required a minimum of two people to carry and operate because it was so heavy. You also had to have extra barrels, because the barrels would get so hot they had to be changed. Today's M-60E3 is much lighter and the new composite metals keep the barrel cool so that they do not have to be changed.
M249's also fire 5.56. Squad leaders carry the SAW w/ a scope, as mentioned in the autopsy report/de-brief report, the squad leader of the other element was carrying a M249 w/ scope.

I highly doubt the XM29 will be the next Army weapon. The SCAR 17 is the next SOCOM weapon already in use in Afghanistan. I think that weapon or the SCAR 16 which fires 5.56 will be the next Army rifle.

The OICW has been in use in Afghanistan since 2001, but it appears that you may be right. According to the Army the XM29 Program has not been abandoned, but the fact that the XM29 was not present at the last two trade shows would seem to indicate otherwise. The Heckler & Koch XM8 now seems to be their favorite as a replacement for the M-16 and M-4, and it is currently being tested at Fort Wainwright.
Not in my day, the three round burst was put on because soldiers had a tendancy to empty the clip.
In Marine Corps boot camp in 1972 we were taught to fire the M-16A1 "John Wayne" style when using full auto. If you are walking, the weapon is held at hip level, with one hand on the pistol grip and the other on top of the hand-guard, in order to hold the weapon down and keep it level.
It was still not an easy task to hit your intended target, even at close range. Personally, I did not complain when the M-16A2s came out with the 3-round burst. I think anything beyond the third shot on full auto is wasted anyway.
A heavier weapon, like the M-249 SAW or M-60E3, is easier to hold on target. Even then, you are taught to fire in 3 to 5 round bursts.
