The Heckler & Koch XM8 now seems to be their favorite as a replacement for the M-16 and M-4, and it is currently being tested at Fort Wainwright.
XM8 program died a fiery death back in '07. The only two viable platforms now being considered was the HK 416, and the SCAR 17-H. Some believe the SCAR -16s will also be considered since it's compatible w/ the 5.56 NATO round.
