Oh, so NOW you change the subject. I NEVER discussed open or closed shop - the issue at question is WHY should the unions give up their collective bargaining rights (specifically their right to negoiate pay) - especially when OTHER UNIONS (ie the ones that SUPPORTED Walker's ELECTION) get to keep their rights?
Ken
Because the "other unions" are private unions which deal with private companies, these are public unions that work for the government and are paid 100% by tax dollars. Please understand the huge difference.
Funny how you LEAVE OUT the fact that Alverez gave big pay hikes to his buddies (including an 11% raise to his chief of staff), pushed through a new publicly-funded stadium for the Florida Marlins (against the will of the electorate), and had several poltical & governmental scandals during his term.
It wasn't JUST about the TAX HIKES. GOP Mayor Alvarez was quite frankly doing a TERRIBLE JOB on numerous fronts - and ticked off the voters (something the GOP is starting to experience itself in Wisconsin).

Gee - the Police union and the Firefighters union are PRIVATE UNIONS? Funny, I thought those folks worked for the state and local GOVERNMENTS.
If raises are given based on the financial health of the "company" and the state of the labor market public worker labor unions don't deserve any raise at all given the fact that their states are broke and there's so much labor on the market right now that they could all be easily replaced tomorrow.
And the UNIONS are not GETTING a raise - in FACT they are taking what amounts to a nearly 10% PAY CUT - that's not a bone on contention. The unions had ALREADY AGREED to that.
The issue is their FUTURE right to any potential pay raises when times are better.
How would YOU like it if your boss told you "You will never EVER get anything more than a cost of living raise"?
Tell me how much YOU would like THAT.

Imagine that, Alvarez gave his chief of staff a LOWER pay hike than he gave the police and you think that's the problem.
Get a clue, Alvarez gave the police and other PUBLIC EMPLOYEES pay hikes, raised the taxpayers' property tax bills to PAY FOR IT, and was promptly recalled by 88% of the voters.
Taxpayers are mad as hell and they aren't going to take it anymore. Union greed is done!
