It's really very hard for me to see why anyone would be obsessed with it or afraid of it or mad about it. And yet people are?
Your definitions simply describe nature. When a society is not diverse in those aspects you mentioned, there would have to be an unnatural reason for that. For instance the one child policy in China, which screwed up the sex balance.

Can one call a society diverse where all those things you mentioned are present? Not necessarily. Look at Japan, it is clearly not a very diverse country.

Yes this country is a "melting pot", but forcing us to have diversity has to have some repercussions, right?
Because they have nothing else to focus on.

Excellence is already "spoken-for" by the conservatives.

How is Japan not diverse?

Because it's better for society to be inclusive, rather than exclusive.

Well stated. And apparently, sadly, it is necessary to educate people about all of these states.

That is exactly the point. In certain areas of the US people have only lived in WASP communities, even single-family homes have been a rareity in some areas. Education about that which we know little is never a bad thing.

In terms of ethnicity and race it is very homogeneous. If you come from NYC or any other major Western city and travel through Japan you will immediately notice the lack of diversity. You will find some diversity in Tokyo and a few other big cities, but the rest of the country is all Japanese. Similar to Montana. Who would call Montana a diverse state?

So you mean Japan is not ethnically diverse.

But in terms of interests, ability, education, areas of success, etc Japan is diverse.

A conservative world…

Clearly, it isn’t just a liberal idea to be obsessed with diversity.

Again, those aspects are present in every society. If this thread is about your definition of diverse, we might as well close this thread.
Actually, it is conservatives who are for your kind of diversity, bashing egalitarian tendencies wherever they can, instead promoting gaps in wealth, education etc.
