Because they know that the Great Recession will last at least another five years, and at this point there is very little the government can do about it. The government will also have to make some painful choices on spending and taxes; why be the guy on the spot? Better to let the economy sort itself out through the next election, then if things improve make a run.
With Rubio out, I could see it going to Rep. Allen West of Florida. Perry, Cain, Romney are all weakest on foreign policy, which would make West a good pick. Plus West is the bulldog type, and has great speaking skills.
And if Cain were to get the nod, Cain-West would be the first all-black ticket ever, running not as Democrats but as Republicans.
Allen West is a disgrace. He may play well in FLA, however, I suspect that there are more than a few people who, like me, are completely disgusted by the fact that he abused his position as an officer in the Army and as a result was forcibly retired. Could have and should have sent his butt to Leavenworth.
A military officer relieved of duty does not belong anywhere near the office of president.
I think this is the most likely reason why so many Republicans are choosing not to run. Politics aside, most thinking people know that the economy isn't the president's fault, and there isn't much a president can do to fix it. So why take a job that almost guarantees certain failure?
In a time of crisis, what the nation needs is a bold leader with a bold vision. I know you righties hate him, but you must admit that FDR was such a leader. He stepped up and took America in a radically different direction. He knew he would have enemies, and he didn't care. He "welcomed their hatred" in his own words.
I think the dissappointment with Obama is that he's not that leader. And those of us on the Left, let's face it -- he's not. He's a nice placeholder president, the kind who would do a fine job if times were easy. So the nation turns to the Republicans. And what do they find there? They find their best leaders shrinking from the task at hand, leaving nothing but a collection of freaks, geeks and cranks.

You are absolutely correct! Especially for the crap that he did! If he has that type of God-complex as an officer can you imagine what it would be like as the president
