This is yet the latest Neo Prog trick, creating new terms and perpetuating the politics of jealousy. What exactly does "underemployed" mean exactly?
You used to make $120k as a software developer, but since your job is now sitting comfortably in Mumbai, India, you are now a burger and fries development manager making $45k. Does that sum it up for you?
It means you cannot pay your bills without sacrificing something necessary, such as good food or a safe place to live.
It means not being able to send your kid to a school field trip.
It means you are working part-time when you need to work full-time.
Oh, yeah...'perpetuating the politics of jealousy'...what a laugh!
That's just a right-wing attack, calling everyone who wants fairness 'jealous' of the wealthy. I don't know, maybe the RW's ARE jealous! Whoever comes up with these concepts is most likely the one having the jealous feeling.

^^ Good example.
But at the lower end of the spectrum it is even more of an impact on a household
with the difference between the $12,000 ($8 x1500hrs) get by job
is compared to the $28,000 job ($14 x2000hrs with benefits and likely some OT as well)
that person has proven themselves capable to do.
This still modest wage of $28,000 is 2.33 times what they're getting now.
This is underemployed.

Yes. Very well.
Jealous? Who likes the special treatment that Wall Street and it's cronies are getting?
It is not bad to expect a house, a car, and medical coverage in the USA for the average American worker. You cannot have those things with the "new" jobs coming to America.
The tendency for giant corporations to channel money and power to the top is not good. They need to be put on a short leash with anti-trust laws that work against monopolies.
Hey Sophiasmommy, do you want more middle class or less middle class in America?

Underemployed means that you're nearly 50, have a Master's degree, and used to be a high school science teacher, but now you're working at the local Y as a part-time life guard with several high school kids as coworkers while you look for another teaching job in a different state. This describes someone I know.
I was wondering that myself, and I NEVER agree with you...!
