As I waited at a red light today, I noticed that the car behind me had an girl (roughly eight years of age) on the passenger seat and a toddler in a child seat on the rear bench. The mother was vigorously smoking a cigarette while the windows were closed.

To me, people who smoke either have a really hard time breaking their addiction or they are stupidly choosing to ignore the problems associated with smoking. Still, since they are adult and since smoking is legal, I think that they have every right to be idiots and smoke. I do not appreciate that their habits cause higher health insurance rates, but so does eating an unhealthy diet or not exercising. Thus, for the sake of this argument, I am willing to ignore this.

What I don't get is why people would do this to their children (or to any child, really).

Some smokers on CD seem to argue that second-hand smoke has no adverse effects - but healthcare professionals seem to strongly contradict such assertions (as does common sense).

Any ideas?
I think the kid will live.

Ripped straight from the archives of "truth.org"

Rule of debate #1:

The person making the claim of positive, YOU, { i.e. SHS is unhealthy } has the burden of proof.

So in otherwords, we have to prove anything we say and you dont? uhhuh.....Gotcha loud and clear.

Could the reason you are so reluctant to delve into the technical details of the issue be because you have no clue what you are discussing? Thats what I think. Infact, I doubt you even read your own links. Just Google, copy-paste.

Well I doubt it to, seeing as they have been programmed to think that way....

Quote:

And how are you so sure that SHS is what caused this. Despite the fact that the most common cause is smoking { not exposure to SHS but actually smoking, } have a look at some of the other potential causes......

Why are you so quich to blame your parents smoking??? Let me guess, your doctor told you, right?

Says you. A person is actually exposed to numerous chemicals throughout the day without even realising it.
I totally agree. With all the ranting and preaching to choir, the least reverend pommy could do is provide a link to back up all of her whining and harrassment of anyone that disagrees with her.

It is my opinion that posters like pommy are most welcome to state their opinion.
What I don't understand is, since they offer nothing more than that, including not a thing to back up their opinion and will not investigate any of the material presented from others so that they can comment on that material, why do we have more than one post from them?
Saying something many times does not make it any more factual.

Mr McFadden
I read through the discussion you (and others) had with James Repace.
Fascinating.
It should be required reading for anybody that gives unquestioned credence to 'expert' testimony.

Usually the righties around here agree with pommysmommy. That said, I know PLENTY of liberals who also vehemently diagree with anti-smoking legislation.

Which tells me one thing - this isn't about politics - it's about addiction and the unwillingness of the addict to admit that their addiction may cause harm to people other than themselves. Classic trait of an addict. An addict has to manage (usually through denial of harm to self or others) that guilt to justify continued use, after all...

Just had a small conversation with Michael about this. Do you really think most of the people who want others to stop smoking around them would mind waiting til they're away from kids to drink as the tradeoff? Who out there has a drinking problem while also having a strong stand against smoking?

There is. The judgement of poor parenting and bad role models in general is based on this very concept, and it's applied to a wide variety of behaviors. Like with casinos, many of them don't allow children to sit there and watch their parents play. They can walk right through to go from a hotel room to a restaurant or something, but it's generally frowned upon to let them loiter there.

It is still a compulsive behavior. Also, caffeine is physically addictive as well. Plus, it is not just the physical addiction that makes smoking so hard to quit (otherwise nicotine gum and inhalers would be far more effective), but the psychological factors as well.

Uh huh. Also, talking about addiction and "for your own good" is a classic example of excuse to butt into other people's lives. It has happened with everything from masturbation to alcohol to homosexuality to marijuana to smoking.

yeah well, some doctors are so against smoking and smokers they will say this...again, is smoking bad for you, yes, it is, however, there are less people smoking in the U.S. then ever before...when I was growing up, almost everyone smoked...

Take a stroll through a cancer center, and ask these people if they ever smoked before...most of them have not..

they are not telling people what people need to know...what is REALLY causing all the cancers....

Don't forget the best excuse for nannyism: "It's for the children."

That one works every time.

if goverment would be true to themselves when they say "it is for the children", then they would be less in the lives of the people they are supposed to serve, and allow the people more latitude and freedom on the way the people raise their own children.

Idiots...I see way, way more people on cell phones and texting while driving...who are idiots...and with children in the car...way way way more people...so for that one person you saw smoking in the car, I see 15 people on cell phones with kids in the car...if I knew anyone was driving my kid anywhere and talking on the cell phone, I'd give them a verbal what for....I think people who obsess about smokers are idiots...it is definately an obsession/fear that is utterly ridiculous...as I said before, there are way less people smoking in the U.S. then ever before...way less...but you people won't give up until everyone thinks and feels like you do, and it will never happen.
I challenge you to go to a cancer center, and view the 100's of people that are there with cancer, who never smoked a day in they're lives...not to mention all the children?????? But you don't have any idea how this is happening, do you? We are breathing, eating and drinking that cancer...in our foods and water supplies....

oh, and how bout people who are constantly running, they are also a health hazard...and generate millions of dollars for knee replacements later on in life...take a walk into a knee surgeons office and see how many people are in there waiting for knee replacements....

geeze louise you people don't think...you obsess, and are not able to view a bigger picture...
