I have to agree that there is a strain of it in conservative America. But there is also a strain of it in liberal America. It may not be directed to the same people groups or social strati, but everyone has bigotry in them. For me - I can't stand people who think they are perfect. It's such an insult to those of us who really are.

Yeah if he's calling it out it's a definite sign either the folks running things now are too dumb to figure out how dog-whistle tactics work or they just don't care and are going for broke before all the old white folks die off. The latter isn't really the worst strategy; a president or two can appoint agreeable supreme court justices who will effect multiple generations of decisions, and senators rarely step down after a single term. But my gut says it's more likely the former case.

Never attribute to conspiracy what can be adequately explained through incompetence.

A strain of bigotry on the right?

I would say there's more like a strain of sanity in an ocean of bigotry.

A poll like this is pretty useless.

When it comes to any form of discrimination, conservatives are guilty until proven innocent in the minds of liberals. And there are far more liberals on this website than conservatives. So you might as well put up a poll "Is grass green?" for all the value you're going to get out it.

No matter how stupid that sounds, you guys are gonna keep saying it regardless.

About as many people voted for Obama because he's black than Republicans that voted for McCain because he's white.

Sorry, but the reputation is well earned. You guys didn't get it for nothing.

I don't think he's trying to shut down or silence any viewpoints. He's giving his assessment of what he's heard. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Are you trying to shut down or silence people from using the word "bigot"? That would be ironic.

And most Democrats were conservatives back then. This doesn't have anything to do with the history of political parties. Goldberg is talking about conservatives (and a bit about liberals).
