Teaching is one thing............joining in occupy protests is another. The college is basically putting the kids in danger IMO. If, and I say if, joining these protests is part of the grade then It's completely wrong communist indoctrination or not.
That's how you're characterizing this component of the class? I just read the actual class syllabus. It involves attending 4 meetings and/or events and then writing a paper about it. For instance, one could attend 4 NAACP meetings (the chapter right there on campus) or 4 of the Unitarian Church's Peace Committee meetings, and then write a paper about it.
"Portland State University is offering a number of controversial courses this semester, the likes of which include “Revolutionary Marxism: Theory and Practice,“ and ”Art Within Activism”..."
"The course’s instructors, Grant Booth and Wael Elasady, are both admitted socialists. They define the course’s goals as:
1. Students will learn the fundamentals of Marxist theory
2. Students will apply a Marxist analysis to current events
3. Students will apply Marxist theory to local political and community organizing
Moreover, students will seemingly be required to forge a “community connection” with a local community/political organization from a specified list. Some of the “approved” organizations include: Occupy PSU, Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights, Occupy Portland, Portland Boycott-Divestment-Sanctions Coalition (BDS), Jobs with Justice, and the May Day Coalition."
I suspect that the students' tuition dollars are paying for it.
And college students do take courses on political theory, social theory, economic theory. Marxism is a political theory that has had an impact on our world. Therefore, it's an appropriate topic for study. Studying Marxism does not mean that students will become Marxists. Every political theory has weaknesses and strengths. I'm sure the professors will explore the weaknesses of Marxism (which is a purist philosophy that has never been practiced in the real world), as well as the strengths.
So what? Politics is activism, activism is politics.
So, you would be okay with a public university offering a course in Nazism taught by a self proclaimed Neo-Nazi who requires the students to not only learn about Nazism but also actively apply what they have learned in the class at Neo-Nazi Community Organizations?
You are extremely generous with your tax dollars.

Actually, as a Portland resident, I thank you.
I prefer people to be able to think for themselves and form their own opinions, even if I disagree with that opinion. I just prefer that opinion to be founded in actual real knowledge, not knee-jerk reactions.
As I pointed out before, there are far worse things to be worried about going on at that specific college vs. a class that students take voluntarily.

If you equate Marxism with Nazism or Neo-Nazism, then you ought to take a course in Marxism. Which elements of Marxism do you put on the same level as Nazism?
Yes, there really are Marxists and socialists living in America. I heard a Marxist giving a talk on the radio the other month.

If a school wanted to teach a class on Fascism, I'd be fine with it, even if taught by a fascist (who better to teach it?). And it wouldn't bother me if, as part of the class, they had to study real-life fascist organizations. Enough students attend College Young Republican meetings as is - I don't see a problem having students attend those meetings and then write a paper about their experience.

HA! Nice deflection. I knew you wouldn't truly be in favor of "free thinking!" when it's not your cup of tea. You're a Progressive. But, you know what? That hypothetical course replacing the teaching of Nazism instead of Marxism might actually benefit you. You might learn about the difference between freedom and propaganda as it applies to Fascism. I'd also recommend a book called, "Liberal Fascism" by Jonah Goldberg that might help remind people how Fascism, contrary to popular belief, doesn't necessarily come from the Right.
who cares.......who goes to Portland State anyways........unless they are going to promoye their Marxism when their managing McDonalds
