She would have been far better off shooting him than shooting into the ceiling, thus wrecklessly endangering other people in the apartment building. If she had shot him, she could have used "stand your ground." Instead, she's just another knucklehead who acquires a gun and doesn't know the law or how to use the weapon.

Although her actions of shooting at the ceilings were indeed wreckless, it still doesnt warrant 20yrs in prison. Rapists receive less time than that.

She didn't stand her ground, she fired a shot randomly through the wall of the house with no intention of it hitting her husband who she had previously filed a restraining order against only to have it amended when she found out she was knocked up by the same "abusive" man.

You can only be protected by gun laws when you kill people I guess.

Was anyone living above where that shot into the ceiling went?

More complete story here (sans the racebaiting of the OP's article): Marissa Danielle Alexander - Business Insider

Quote:
According to an op-ed by Greg Newburn in The Florida Times Union, jurors were NOT told that if convicted, Alexander would serve a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years imprisonment.

Florida's mandatory minimum sentences have taken away the discretion of judges in other cases.Where they apply, mitigating factors like spotless criminal records, or testimony that crimes were committed from fear rather than malice cannot be considered by the judge in the sentencing phase.
Sounds like there is more to the story than we know. Did this woman have a previous criminal record which subjected her to a Florida mandatory minimum sentence?

Ah yes, female relationship Darwinism.

Honestly, I think she had a moron for a lawyer if he couldn't get her off for this. And a jackass of a prosecuting attorney, out to make a name for herself.

Quote:
The tough charges came from the office of prosecutor Angela Corey, the same Florida prosecutor who charged George Zimmerman with the second degree murder of Trayvon Martin.
Pathetic that a prosecutor wants to make a few points for herself and someone goes to jail for doing the right thing. At least close to the right thing, she should have dropped the SOB.

Of course there is the other side of the story...

Touré: Where's 'Stand Your Ground' for Marissa Alexander? | TIME Ideas | TIME.com

She was convicted by a jury who didn't believe her story but did believe the husbands side which the idiots tend to not let you know... read the third paragraph for the what the other side said happened...
