To this day I still don't understand how any black person or anyone from an oppressed, underprivileged social group can vote republican. Republicans only represent the interest of those at the very top which are: upper-middle class to rich, white, mostly male, 30-60 yr olds, Pro-Christian, conservative, old fashion values. The republican party doesn't even have any interest in anyone who doesn't fit that criteria, other than making sure they stay at the bottom.

Then why are you living in the United States??? Why don't you take advantage of the freedoms we still have and leave??? We don't hold people here. Seriously. That's pure hyprocricy.....

You people really kill me.

Republicans have to go soft on some of their core beliefs. Particularly the ones that attack Government and Health Education and Welfare.
They should use religion more effectively like Bush did with his "Faith Based" initiative. This gave local entities the responsibility to do something that the Government was failing at. Instead of attacking the EPA and regulations shift some of the responsibility to local county and state extension to monitor their own environments. Show tangible links between corporate profits and jobs.
If society was integrated from the top down we wouldn't be where we are today. Integration is seen as some thing for folks on the bottom rung of society.

That's hypocritical. A person should be allowed to express their own political views in the US, just as long as your freedoms don't extend past mine. In fact, it's this view that you hold that really is bogging down the political system. There should be more dissenting views from the left. America's extreme right is well represented in politics. While I am not a huge fan of it, I am happy that the extreme right has the ability to grow (although I personally see this growth in mostly a negative light). What about the left? It's obviously not balanced.

Again, while I personally wish the right were not in control of most aspects of American society, it should have the right to express itself without people stating that if you don't like it get out. The left should be able to have the same privilege as well.

This is the biggest problem with the modern right. They have this insane idea that their freedoms give them the right to trample on the rights of others. As long as that is the case, they won't be getting much of the minority vote.

The right, Republicans for the most part (but Republicans also include moderates), should give up on the notion that corporate profits directly translates to more jobs. With the age of globalization and mechanization, profits translates to less jobs (efficiency). Thus the bottom line is the priority (which to a certain extent should be the case). However, Republicans must acknowledge that their constituents don't all belong to the 1%. Thus, how are they going to be the party of the 99%, when they favor policies that are more aligned with the highest wage earners in the nation? Clearly there is a huge disconnect. While minorities were disproportionately hit by the recession, Republicans rallied to raise taxes on the poor, cut social programs that aimed to alleviate some of the economic hardships that families were facing (unemployment benefits comes to mind), and cut taxes for the richest Americans (whose incomes and worth grew as corporations were showing record profits).

Republicans are more likely to be nationalistic and racist. Most probably aren't, but the policies and gaffes made by Republicans in these two areas are not normally seen on the left. It's a little hard to join a party that has a large proportion of its members not like you based on skin color, religion, or sexuality.

I think that an open, more pragmatic Republican party is what minorities are looking for. Not a Republican party that carters to its more extreme members.

I have never seen a more stupid, idiotic, misinformed bunch of comments before in this topic. This topic accomplished one thing, not the OP, but that Americans are so bamboozled and removed from reality that it's impossible to convince them of anything that falls outside their purview of racism. There is so much black and white thinking in this thread, it makes me sick. No wonder this country is being thrown to the wolves, the general public is too riled up in thinking of "us vs them", "blacks vs whites". All of you should be ashamed of yourselves, falling for the same propaganda that the British instituted in the 1600s, divide and conquer the races while claiming that they care about you.

Wanted to mention that I listen to Tom Joyner every morning, it is a good show and they do have black GOP members on their show, Steele was a frequent guest and they were very cordial to him and Tom said plenty of times that he didn't agree with him a lot politically but he still respected him and considered him a friend. They joked around a lot. I don't know about Steve Harvey since I don't like his show (other than when Nephew Tommy calls people and pranks them as I have a recording of all of them for some years and he is freaking hilarious and FWIW, he does prank some white people too and they usually go off worse than the black people LOL).

Many black people don't like being referenced to as "thugs." Like I am sure that you wouldn't like to be. It would be better to speak of specific sorts of behaviors or crimes that you don't like, or just crime in general if you don't want to offend black people by lumping us all who live in the inner city as being a part of "thug culture."

In regards to this, I can see why you are a nut in chicago, hopefully you do not take offense but I don't listen to "race pimps" and black people have made significant gains throughout the years economically as well as through education, so your ignorance is showing in thinking that we are not "succeeding" whatever your definition of success is. I am a black women, I am married, both my husband and I have college degrees both of us are from depressed backgrounds, meaning we were raised by single mothers in the "inner city" (though we are not thugs) my husband is from Chicago as well, the south side, which gets pegged on the whole as a "war zone" but that is far from reality when it comes to his neighborhood. He was never in a gang or in prison and his mom did the best she could with him and his younger brother, like most parents, both of her sons are college graduates and have never been in any trouble with the law.

Contrary to what you think, most poor black people are too busy working to listen to Sharpton or Jackson and also Sharpton and Jackson are not our "leaders." My husband especially despises Jesse Jackson and thinks he is a term I won't say on this site. But we don't really listen much to them.

In regards to the OP, I actually am a registerd independent who is probably center left. I say center left because I am for universal health coverage via an expansion of medicare to cover all US citizens, also I am an atheist and am not religious and don't like the so called "values" that the GOP supposedly is has and fights for.

IMO to gain more black voters in particular, you can stop the "inner city thug" talk. You can stop referencing black people. When speaking of not liking welfare recipients or those who abuse our social safety net and you are asked by the media if you are talking about black people, you can say that you are not talking about black people and that you would appreciate it if the media would not try to make everything about race and bring up the fact that the majority of black Americans are not on welfare or use social services.

You can stop any sort of racial or ethnic references. You appeal to all voters and kick out the racist element or the GOP and condemn their racists comments. You can do like another poster mentioned and campaign in areas where black people live, contrary to popular belief, all black people do not live in the "inner city" where you think it is unsafe. You can stop saying that people are "playing the race card" when you ask black people questions regarding reasons for disparity in black communities and they answer you in a way you don't like.

Another way to gain more black support is to speak more of how school vouchers will help the black community. Many black people support vouchers and I am certain that those who don't currently would if they had a better understanding of them. My whole family loves the voucher program in OH and all of my nephews go to private school with vouchers (I have 5 nephews and the oldest of them go to single gender schools that are the best in the city and are grateful to have the opportunity to go to such elite schools). All people want their kids to have a good education and vouchers and other school choice options like Charter schools are an issue where the GOP can gain a lot of support if they went out and educated the masses about how these options won't "destroy public education" a credo I have heard touted by democrats, especially here in GA where I live now.

ETA: Most black people also are not in support of illegal immigration. Al Sharpton would like you to believe the opposite though. Illegal immigration is an area where you can gain a lot of support amongst black people. I am very adamant in my opposition of allowing illegal immigrants to have access to our social services. I also do not want older immigrants who just moved to this country allowed to draw SS even though they have never paid into the fund. Poor immigrants a lot of times move to poor black neighborhoods and as such tax an already expended school system and health clinic/social services sytems as well and many do not like it since those people aren't even American citizens. You would gain a lot of support amongst black people just by making sure that illegal immigrants do not have access to social services. Here in GA pretty much all of the black people I know supported our anti-illegal immigration bill even though they do not vote for the GOP.
Yes, I do take offense at your remark that I am a nut who lives in Chicago. A difference of opinion makes me a nut? For one thing, my handle has nothing to do with the city of Chicago itself, I don't live there nor have I ever. I live in Calif. So you can set your erroneous assumptions about me to rest.

What I said is that blacks have every bit the ability to succeed in life as any other American but the leaders in the black community would rather see them living on the entitlement plantation based on past discrimination. Race baiting is a money maker for them. Those like Sharpton, and Jackson have done very little to help blacks become self-sustaining. You may be the exception to the rule that doesn't listen to them but far too many blacks do. I haven't a thing against my fellow black Americans and in fact I want them to succeed just like any other American.

If the majority of blacks are opposed to illegal aliens they sure aren't getting that point across. Far too many of them side with them because Hispanics (who comprise the majority of illegal aliens) are also a minority. There is still a lot of resentment towards white Americans in the black community compliments of Sharpton and Jackson. What I don't understand about blacks who feel that way is that many blacks have been shoved out of their neighborhoods and jobs by illegal aliens. This should cause a furor among them but if there is we sure aren't hearing about it.

Most nations with Conservative policies are evil and oppressive. Why on earth would we want to do that?

As you said to Ipod, take advantage of your freedom and leave. Iran is probably quite nice this time of year, and it will have all the Conservatives you could ever dream of.
