I think that those under 18 should be mandated to wear a seat belt. Over 18, it's your choice.

it is just for revenue...... If it wasn't there would be seat belts and no law.

You must be very unlucky to get pulled over for not wearing your seat belt.
That's the issue. I don't believe I was pulled over for simply wearing a seat belt. It seems that they pull over blacks and hispanics at much higher rates expecting to get them on other charges.

In my situation yesterday, I was turning while the cop was sitting in the turn lane facing away from me. I was at least 100 yards away before I find out the cop had busted a U-Turn (in traffic) and comes racing to stop me. I pulled over because i thought he had an emergency, not because I thought I'd broken any laws.

The cop was obviously going out of his way to pull me over for not wearing a seatbelt. If over 40% of drivers aren't wearing their seatbelt, what made it so imperitive that he pulled ME over?? Hmmmm

My husband was in an accident this past week. A 16-year-old in oncoming traffic made a left turn right in front of him. They hit basically head-on. Thankfully both of them survived with only minor injuries... Both had on their seatbelts... Any question which way I answered the question...

Seatbelt laws, just like motorcycle helmet laws, are at the state level. I'm not certain why the OP thinks that there are not public awareness campaigns, there are. I see them constantly on TV and along the interstate alert sign systems as well as hearing them on radio public service announcements.

To claim that nobody will be harmed except the person not wearing the seatbelt is egocentric at best. Not all harm is physical, much is economic as well ( EMS responder time, cost & risks, lost income, hospital expenses, insurance, life insurace for survivors, etc...). That said, how can the OP predict with any accuracy where his/her body, as an unrestrained projectile in a vehicular accident will go or land?

Clue: Upon birth you were assigned a number by the State (read federal government & SSN). From that time on it laid claim to a share of any income or wealth you may earn/receive in your lifetime via taxation. People who increase their risk of being non-producers via things like not wearing a seatbelt, etc..., will be taxed for their non-compliant behavior to the states' laws.

As in all things............follow the money.

I think seat belt laws were the one of the first step towards the rapidly growing Nanny State. Sure, there were other laws, but that was the first large scale "for your own good" law that spread to virtually everywhere.

I do think that you should still wear seat belts as a lot of fatal car accidents could have been prevented by wearing one, but that doesn't mean it should be the law (at least regarding those over 16 or adult age).
I agree with you. I'm not advocating not wearing one. I just think it should be our choice as an adult. Kids seat belt laws are acceptable.

I wear my seat belt occasionally on the highway.

Do you support the outlaw of motorcycles as well?? They don't have seatbelts and are much, much, much more dangerous.
