I really have no problem with men being the only ones required to enlist. I think most men would rather volunteer to go overseas in a wartime situation than to allow their neighbor girl to get sent off in a draft.

For those of you arguing the posters point about physical activity among men vs. women. It is common knowledge that men are generally genetically superior to women for physical activity. There are some weak men, and strong women, but for the most part the expected range of testosterone levels are much higher for men (about 90% higher).

Check out the list of Olympia Weight Lifting Records:

There is a reason there was a lot of controversy surrounding transsexuals in olympic games.

Obviously the entire military isn't physical. But I still would feel better getting shipped overseas than allowing a young woman to get sent if she didn't want to go.

Slightly off topic but I don't think war is really a place for women.

They might have to look out for very testosterone driven, adrenalined men from their own side as well as from the enemy.

If women are sent then they should be heavily trained in hand to hand combat.

[quote=maurb;25957629] If women don't have the same requirement to register for the draft, why should they have the same opportunity as men to enlist?

The draft has NOT been reinstated; however, boys still have to register for selective service upon turning 18.

IMO, it's time to either require everyone to register(not just men) or do away with selective service, altogether.
Perhaps the powers that be forsee an huge increase in the population and/or too many issues related to reproduction if females were drafted.

If a woman is going to draw the pay for the same rank she should have to serve in combat or not be allowed to join!

Great. Let's do away with wars altogether. Looking over the history of human kind, the overwhelming majority have been started by men -- so you shouldn't have any trouble in stopping them.

As for double-standards, why is it that men think they have a right over women's bodies, yet not one man has ever had to bear the result of their sexual folly?

Face it. Life isn't fair, regardless of what anyone thinks it should be -- it is not.

To the argument that not all military love are combat...that is true HOWEVER, everyone in theater needs to be capable of combat in case a position is overrun...otherwise we'd just have civilians doing those jobs.

Plus, at least when I was in women were only required to lift 40# yet most mechanics boxes weighed 80-100# ....guess how their toolboxes got to the equipment...you guessed it, a MAN had to carry it for them...he had to either carry two or make two trips...but got paid the same!

My wife and I agree that women should have equal opportunity in both life and death.
If women enlist they should have the opportunity to get their head blown off just like a man who enlists does.
That is not a crack at equal rights for women but an honest answer concerning how women should have equal rights and opportunities in all aspects of living and dying.

If a woman enlists and earns the right to be in the armed forces then it should include all aspects period.
