IMO, it's time to either require everyone to register(not just men) or do away with selective service, altogether.
An additional point i would like to add...

Members of congress declare war and people vote for members of congress. Logically all voters, men and women, should have to register for selective service because they are taking part in a choice which affects the possible declaration of war, which can lead to a draft. Voting without having to also register for the draft means taking part in a decision making process that can only risk the lives of others. This should have been taken into consideration with the implementation of the 19th amendment. If it is illegal to discriminate against voters based on sex, then it should also be illegal to discriminate against who should be required to defend that vote based on sex.

It's unwise to require all women to register because it's known that majority of women are WEAKER physically than men. That means they are not as capable of doing the "hard labor" stuff. Some women are more manly, it's like they are men born in women's bodies. They should be allowed to do it if they feel that they can.

On that note, some of the weak men should not be forced either. It has to be the right match for the right job.

The wisest thing is to let those who are capable to do it, and those who are not capable not do it.

There are plenty of roles in the military for which women are eminently suited. The military today is not just about being physically strong. It is also requires technological savvy, manual dexterity and outstanding organizational skills. Equality does not just mean that women get all the good stuff. It should also carry with it all the obligations and that includes selective service.

Just because something is considered a double standard doesn't mean the authority will rectify it.

To answer your question, two reasons might be:
1) Allowing women to enlist increases the pool of military personnel (soldiers) the military has access to, and
2) Denying women the ability to enlist is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

As a 20 year vet and as one who watched the integration of women into the ASW squadrons I feel strongly that the women are capable of doing their jobs. Also feel they could be drafted and do well, so my position will be~~~ when they get around to having to rework the sss or draft and they start drafting again, its time to include women into the draft....but considering other priorities in the country and lack of concensus in the political landscape I can think of other things that need to be accomplished long before including women into a draft that doesn't draft.

The reason women aren't required to sign up for selective service is becuase politics and media are overly involved in the way our military is run. There would be a large public outrage if a bunch of mothers/daughters/sisters were to be drafted. Add to that the fact that women are more likely to be raped by either the enemy or their fellow military members and you are really opening a media circus. This outrages the public and that scares the politicians. Something that many civilians don't realize is that the military is supposed to be focused on what is best for the military and our nations security. It isn't supposed to be based on "fairness". This goes along the topic of opening certain combat jobs to women. Can some women do the job to standards? Yes. But if there isn't a tangible benefit then why are we creating a potentially damaging environment? Besides the political and public outrage, there is another reason that it would be difficult to have women drafted. If only men can be drafted, then there is always a parent to care for children (assuming it is a complete household). If both men and women can be drafted then we are raising the possibility of children without any parents. Not only is that not good for the children but it means the parents would likely not be very effective Soldiers either. It is very hard for a 2 Soldier family who chooses the lifestyle to deal with a year deployment apart from their family. For parents that don't have that passion it would likely make them more of a liability than an asset to the service.

So is there anyone who believes women should be allowed to enlist but not required to register with Selective Service?
Registering doesn't mean they will automatically get drafted, handed a rifle and sent off to join the infantry. It just means that if the excrement hits the rotary blades and WWIII starts, they would get called up just like men would. Some would be deferred or exempted, others would be sent to non-combat units, and those who are able would go to combat units. Just like men.
"Fair" is a place you ride rides and eat cotton candy, but we should at least be consistent.

I don't care about consistent, fair or gender blindness when it comes to defending the very existence of the nation.

Honestly, I believe female firefighters are a mistake, also - the loss of the tiny percentage of women that can actually hump a 300lb smoke inhalation victim down flights of stairs pales in comparison to people dying because we were more worried about gender equality than RESULTS.

Does anyone see us having a draft any time again in our lifetimes? We've gone fully from the citizen soldier to the professional soldier, and there is slim to no chance of that changing.

She found that the top ten percent physically rated near the bottom ten percent for men.

I'll see if I can find that paper again and post a link.

Ever wonder why women don't directly compete with most men s sports? There are only a few sports where the physical differences don't matter.

...Here come the emotional responses!
It doesn't take much strength to push a button, or any of the thousands of lethal ways our military has for killing the enemy. Superior physical strength is not as needed in military jobs nowadays. Look at the number of support troops vs. the number of grunts in the field in Afghanistan as an example of our modern military's personnel needs. Each trooper in battle gear needs at least 100 people to support him or her.

We won't be seeing another Normandy invasion ever. it's time to move into the 21st century, cyborg.
