My 3.5 year old has been diagnosed ADHD...he has always been a hyper child and this was his first year of school and we were getting called to school every day to pick him up because he was hitting people and wouldn't listen. Doc has him on Aderrall I can't stand it makes him act like a zombie sometimes but not sure what else to do. His sister was NEVER like this she is active but isn't over active like he is...have never had a problem with her at school.I am at a loss.

My sister was told to put her kid on this crap by the school. When she refused they threatened to take her children away via force by the DHS for denying them medical care. You have to call the school and sign off if you want your kid to take a cough drop at school but load em up on drugs while their brains are still developing not a problem.

There is an interesting study out recently that finds a positive correlation between prenatal mercury exposure and the development of ADHD symptoms. I'll have to see if I can find it for a link.

I was considered hyper active when I was a child, and more than likely would have been a prime candidate for Ritalin or Aderal. Thank God my parents didn't put me on that crap! My son is extremely active as well, but no way in hell would I ever medicate him. Why would I? He is doing quite well in school, and last quarter of 3rd grade got straight A's.

I think it absolutely is lazy parenting for the majority of kids that are on the stuff.

I guess the best demonstration in MY eyes, was my oldest used to love to play Duck Hunt. Never got passed level 3, the first weekend my child was on the medication, she got to level 54 on duck hunt. My daughter was able to focus on the game, instead of being distracted every time the cat ran by, or a door opened. Her grades went to straight A's. BTW, she graduated from college Summa *** Laude.

Again, it's used as a catch all issue for a lot of stuff, but it is VERY real, and for those who are actually affected by it, the medication is extremely beneficial.
I completely agree. I have seen it first hand myself.

Well, let me just say that medicating is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. I'll rely on my knowledge of my child, along with his physician's guidance, rather than rantings from the interwebz to inform my decision about whether or not to treat him. And for now that means a daily dose of Concerta and a whole lot of love and one-on-one attention from his mom and dad.

My kid is 9, so he doesn't have a phone. We've taken away outside time, and his cartoon time to name a few things.

Then your son doesn't have ADHD. Active and hyperactivity are different issues.

I believe ADHD exists. They can see the different brain functioning on PET scans. The glycogen is used differently in the front of the brain. That doesn't mean that something is "wrong" with them, it just means their brains functions much differently than "regular" brains and they often don't do well in a setting that has a lot of distractions and the inability for very little movement. Many ADHD kids do much better (without drugs) in a kinesthetic learning environment such as a Montessori school or similar types of classrooms. They aren't deficient, their brains are just wired differently.

If your son does well despite being an active person, then he doesn't have it. I don't think your qualified to presume that it's lazy parenting. Back when I was in school--the 70s and 80s, we didn't really have a "diagnosis" for it yet, but I knew both males and females who had it. Many barely made it through school and others dropped out early. My best friend's sister dropped out in 10th grade (she was one of three children--the others were fine, and my neighbor's son dropped out--again, one of three that had it). Both went on to go into the trades and did remarkedly well in a different environment and are succesful adults now. It doesn't always turn out that well.

I think today, it is good that we have some knowledge about it and can treat some kids. It keeps them in school and away from naturally medicating with illegal drugs and/or alcohol.

Sure, it is way diagnosed and I don't believe that anything short of a neuropsych eval should be permitted before prescribing the medication.

I hate the cell phones but it gives me some peace of mind knowing when they are out somewhere I can find out right away. They are getting more freedom as they get older but they also know if they don't answer that phone they aren't going anywhere. lol
