University Official Punished For Signing Petition

Quote:
“Until a few years ago, a decision punishing an employee for engaging in the democratic process would have been jaw-dropping. However, Gallaudet University’s discriminatory action reflects a troubling nationwide trend of voter intimidation and bullying tactics against those who uphold marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Over the summer, we saw two mayors attempt to block Chick-fil-A location permits simply because the mayors disagreed with the marriage views of Chick-fil-A’s CEO.”
“A person should no more be punished for signing a petition than they should be for voting. A citizen’s right to participate in our democratic process is at the core of our system of representative self-government.”

How far we have come???? Wait a minute!

Since her signing of the petition had nothing to do with her job, and was not done on the job I don't feel the school has grounds for their actions.

I think Gallaudet University did the right thing by suspending her. First of all, the civil rights of an entire class of people should never go up for a vote in any state in this country by the majority. This woman obviously feels very strongly against same sex marriage which is a conflict in a university. Also, Gallaudet University isn't just any other university, it is a university that is very specific to students who are deaf; another minority which many believe are often disenfranchised in society.

Perhaps people should start a petition preventing deaf people from driving? After all, it is a safety hazard, and for a hearing person to wear any kind of head phones is considered illegal throughout the country. So, why is it not OK for a hearing person to wear headphones, yet it is completely OK for a deaf person to drive? Isn't hearing necessary to be able to drive for safety reasons? Of course it is. So, how would a deaf person feel about a similar petition aimed at attacking their freedom?

It is outrageous, and she ought to sue.

(FWIW I'm totally for same-sex marriage).

In ther end it destroys those causes. just look at when voters in liberal California were given the chance to vote on gay marriage. It really doesn't matter what people who do not beleive in gay marriage will never except gay marriage 'really.

I agree (I'm gay, but I'm not supposed to say so here), and so does the Maryland marriage-equality organization.

Is this a public, or private, institution?

I know that you are for gay marriage but you have read the Constitution and I am not sure that President of the college has. The woman's rights were violated so completely since she has the right to sign anything like that. Maybe we need to help some here in their thinking about this and tell them that she sure is a black woman.
