I read thru most of this thread, and I doubt that there is even 1 post from a liberal that even tries to directly confront the question posed by OP. What a surprise. I am surprised that it seems to have taken until post #99 for someone to get to it's Bush's fault.

Not really, the new reality is:

Republicans: borrow and spend
Democrats: tax AND borrow and spend.

Even more important, do liberals understand why the argument for higher income taxes on those making $250K and above is wholly and completely irrelevant compared to the outstanding trillion dollar deficit?

$82B is enough money to pay the interest on the national debt for 8 days.

Does this even register? Or are you just happy that Barack Obama won the election and everything else is irrelevant?
First off, the deficit is NOT going to be paid off by simply raising taxes any more than it's going to be paid off simply by cutting spending. Realistically it's going to take a combination of the two - and that IS what what WILL happen.

Secondly, we didn't BUILD the deficit overnight and we're not going to DISMANTLE the deficit overnight. It's going to be a long-term process. What's important NOW is simply to GET A START.

Where did you get the idea that like you conservatives, liberals are no better than you "conservatives" and stick with such simplistic ideas?

I have sent the Whitehouse an email for them to be sure and collect double from you! That's my plan. You big ole rich republican!

Simplistic ideas or complex ideas, Liberals have not provided either, including you. I wonder why that is? Is it because the black guy is in the Oval Office and everything else is irrelevant? Or is it because none of you have the complexity of mind to think beyond the soaring rhetoric that won Obama the election?

I trust you to not get anything I've posted. Just as I know you can't have a better grasp of what liberals/progressives like me have DISCUSSED in these threads. It is because you believe everybody else's world has just as constricted view as yours, because you can't deal with anything more than simple words. And you run around with what you pick per convenience blaming others for not explaining it.

PS. I feel pathetic for you though, so here is one more time you could take a look at this post from page 1 of this very thread you created then demonstrate an ability to discuss it, much less lug on to the limited perception you created this thread with.

What will $1.2 Billion a day buy or fund? Whatever you come up with, forget it. $1.2 Billion is what it costs every day to pay interest on the $16 Trillion debt.
Removing $82 Billion a year from 'rich' people will pay the interest on the debt for 68 days.

One can only hope you weren't assuming that defunding PBS was THE fix to fixing something that 82B won't do.

What kind of tax increases do you think Democrats will be able to pull from Republicans after a long and protracted battle over this fight for tax increases for earners of $250K and above?

Do you seriously think that Republicans will consider MORE tax increases after waging this battle, which by the way raises a relatively miniscule amount of revenue???

If Democrats were smart, they'd give up this fight for pennies and dig in for a larger battle for increased revenues.

You folks just don't get it. Once the GOP gives in to this little tax increase, you won't get any more cooperation for a long, long, long time. Certainly not during anytime in Barack Obama's remaining 4 years.

Liberals have never been known for extraordinary foresight, and this is the PERFECT example.
