CHICAGO (Reuters) - The year 2012 was the warmest on record for the contiguous United States, beating the previous record by a full degree in temperature, a government climate agency said on Tuesday.
I think we'll have to start working together around the world to solve the issues climate change will bring us, starting with heat leading to drought to agricultural failure.

When the north has a hotter than average summer, the south has the opposite. Common sense. There is only a certain amount of energy (heat) to distribute.
Btw, 50s during that time period aren't uncommon for a couple days. When I lived in Detroit I remember maybe half a week of 50s coming early January before the hard freeze came.

50's in January for Chicago is not common, lived here my whole life.
When you say the South has been cooler, do you mean like the recent droughts?

Last summer (in Atlanta, moved to Houston this October) was very cool and comfortable compared to the average despite the drought. I heard that the midwest got slammed though. And no, I remember 2-3 days of 50s every year during January in Detroit. Chicago and Detroit don't really differ that much in climate.
