Liars? Just because someone is more observant than you.. that makes them a liar?
When someone says they've never witnessed another shopper use food stamps, then I really have to question their ability to call me and others a "liar." You don't even know what's going on around you so it's obvious you don't have the presence of mind to make that kind of judgment.
I have seen people use EBT but not for lavish things. What I do see is the cashier separating things out by what is allowed by EBT and what is not. And if they don't have cash for the unallowable items then get left behind. Of course, I shop and your average grocery chain that would be plain stupid to get involved in welfare fraud. Which makes me question the original posters account. Based on the items he cited it didn't sound like some inner-city bodega.
If you can buy enough high-end cuts of meat and seafood with $800 and feed a family of 5 for 30 days, my hat is off to them and I would beg to have them teach me how to shop. Absent that, as I've explained previously, I don't care what they buy, what they eat, or how they cook it, I'm fine with giving folks enough money to sustain themselves and their family month to month. If they misspend what we give them, then it is on them. You see unlike the Nanny state that would pass out a proper basket of good or prepared meal, we would rather teach a little personal responsibility and lessons on how to budget and then cutting you loose.
It is real simple. Just go down to the local welfare or social services office be able to show that your gross monthly income is 130% below the poverty line dependent upon how many people are in your family and bingo, you are on the list to be approved for benefits. But if you are expecting to get $800.00 you also better have at least 6 people in your home to feed.

If someone is standing close enough to spot the type of card being used, they are infringing on others space. Many transactions require PIN numbers input. It is immoral to not provide the cardholder with the privacy needed to do so.
