I totally agree with this, I have been taught how to shoot a gun and how to properly handle one. Though the flip side of your statement is that it is just as bad to let children think a gun is toy to be played with.

As much as you seem to think it is, a gun is not a toy.
My 15 yo. daughter has had her own gun for 10 years.
She now has 3, including a 38 police revolver and a wood stock 223 semi auto.
