As a person who focuses on my career and having fun, I would say Chicago offers the best of both worlds for me.
Your lying to yourself when you say Chicago's benefits far outweigh the negatives.
If you get shot come back with an honest face and say that to me

Yeah cause that happens to most Chicagoans. Do you think about what you post or just post it?

Chicago's problems are the same ones that exist in New York who has the same problems that exist in Seattle who has the same problems that exist in Cincinnati and so on and so on. Maybe I should go to the cooking forum or something.
I didn't turn this into an Indianapolis VS Chicago thread.
I was just pointing out something's for Chicagoans and then someone takes it too far and brings a huge Indianapolis VS Chicago pissing contest into this.

ah ya it does happen.
500 homicides is bad but we forget the people that get shot and survive. Still Traumatizing either way.
Plus have you seen the recent mob action in the loop hitting tourist?
Should we have one massive riot in Chicago before you'll accept the fact that its not some safe utopia?

We visited Chicago and the burbs to the far west about 8 or 9 summers ago. Some of the best pictures I ever took were there around the city and the summer weather is great, if chilly at night. The burbs we visited were secluded with no amenities, which is very different than Houston burbs. We pit-stopped somewhere around Midway airport and it was industrial-gritty but not terrible. Sight-seeing around the city was excellent. When you're on foot it is deceiving just how far away everything is. Taking a slum tour wasn't on the agenda. OTOH I found people there somewhat cold & unfriendly. And plenty of them can drink me under the table. I suppose that helps if you live anywhere near the El. The amount of noise and vibration that thing makes is unreal. Driving was more stressful than anywhere in TX or CA but it's key if you want to do lots of things in a short time. It was an enjoyable trip overall that everyone should make, but I have no desire to live or even visit again.

Here is the beauty of being educated and able to process thoughts, ideas and facts. When your own state officials and the federal govt cite statistics with rape, murder and violence and Chicago is high on that list I don't need to be raped, murdered or beaten to understand that it is not as ideal as where I currently live that is literally less than 1% of the crime you have.

I've visited the city, it has some cool restaurants, sports teams and history but it is nothing worthy of living in.

You guys have all kinds of problems, and the lure of big cities has diminished with the advent of technology. It just isn't as vital as it used to be in big cities, coupled with all the additional problems most other cities don't have that you do.

I don't need to live in Chi-town to know what its about.
You do need to live in Chicago to know what it is all about & venture out. Sure there are some
neighborhoods to avoid, but if you only go to tourist areas you have no idea about the rest of the
city and its great neighborhoods. Should I judge NY if I only went to Manhatten? See lot's of
posts from educated people who disagree with you.

I would have never guessed that Indianapolis suffered from Chicago envy. Great city aside from it's political issues. Just glad I don't judge cities based on ridiculous bi-partisanship. "No honey, we can't live there, bunch o'democrats and GD liberals run that city!". Absurd.

In a city with a population of about 3 million, I'd say the chances of living a violent-free life are pretty good. I have friends from college that live there...they love it. You have anecdotes, I have anecdotes. The fact is people like to live there (as evidence by the higher market values than Indy or other midwestern cities).
