Let the Weather Channel buy them out..privatize the weather reporting if the government can't afford to do it anymore.
Let the government worry about making sure empty federal buildings stay clean instead.

Your proposal would cost more than just keeping the weather service as is.

Well the USG is running out of money and we can't print it fast enough.

First it was the FAA and controllers and long lines at airports.
Congress caved and they found money
Now it's the weather service.

Is this how you want your government to operate ?
Threat of closure to get funding ?

Boy I dont know whether to laugh or shake my head at some of the comments. I am a meteorologist myself. The Natl Weather Service was created in 1970....which was formerly the US Weather Bureau...which was formerly the US Signal Corps. It is a federal responsibility as weather doesnt know state lines. It was nationalized as a system of observations back in the days of the railroad building out into the central parts of the nation as it was very important to know weather coming. Remember the great Galveston hurricane of 1900....many thousands dead.

Anyway the cost of computing power to produce model data....the cost of putting in and maintaining satellites, surface observation systems, radar, and then the communication networks so that data is sent out is immense and not something any individual state can do on its own nor any private agency.

Our job is for the protection of life and property and the role of protecting commerce in the United States. Hence its national scope.

All satellite and radar data seen and used by the media and private agencies come from the government/NWS. The government/NWS funds the satellites and built and maintain the radars and without the government no one would have anything in regards to that type of weather data. Accu Weather, WSI or others have no interest in investing the millions/billions needed to maintain such a system.

There is a severe staff shortage in some offices as many vacancies over the past year have not been filled. Eventually you can only go so long with a short staff and something will fall through the cracks.

Let this be a lesson, never go against 0bama or he will cause you as much pain as possible.
Obama? The Sequester requires across the board, let me say that again, across the board reductions. The administration can't pick and choose what programs should be cut and which shouldn't.

THE SEQUESTER REQUIRES ACROSS THE BOARD REDUCTIONS!

This is all political theater brought to you by the Obama administration. The total amount of the sequester budget cuts amounts to 2.2% of the federal budget, and Obama is making certain that its impact is being felt by as many Americans as possible. Obama is an immature cry-baby throwing a tantrum.

You see, if Obama would not have been so greedy demanding a second tax increase then sequester could have been averted.

I don't know who ZeroBama is, but unless you specify who he is and what he means to me or this country, I have no reason to take you seriously.

I know we have Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States of America.

Who is ZeroBama?
